They're all tools, I have Tube amps, SS amps, & an AFII on the way.... as long as you get your tone, who gives a shit how you get there.
+1

The Axe FX isn't a tube amplifier, and it was never meant to be... I'm not sure why tube dudes are so diehard about an irrelevant point.

People are diehard about that "irrelevant" point because A. it models tube amps, and B. FAS markets its ability to model tube amps. I don't know why FAS fanboys are so diehard to ignore this relevant point.

It's a modeler that models tube amps. Are you really that shocked that it's compared to........tube amps?

That being said, this thread in general is a troll thread for sure, and the FAS Axe units ARE great units. I don't own one because I have a mental roadblock to spending $2200 on a modeler, and would rather have a couple amps for that, despite the obvious disparity in versatility. Even on my POD HD500 I generally only use 2 or 3 models, tops, and the HD, while obviously not as good as the Axe is, is still far and away better than every other modeler, IMO.

The sad part is that if we all spent the kinda time we we spent worrying about gear on something worthwhile like practicing it'd be a better way...

Completely agree. Guitarist forums have largely disintegrated into Mac vs. PC arguments. The same answer applies: use what you like, and don't worry about everyone else. I think we can all agree that the tones available for $300-$3000 is like none other during most of our lifetimes. When I started playing when I was 15 (I'm 35 now) there's no way you'd get tones that you can get out of a cheap POD HD nowadays. Stuff like the AxeFX were either a figment of the imagination, or (if you factor its effects capabilities) obscenely expensive. We live in interesting times, gear-wise.

I worry about gear while I'm practicing... so no lost time. Actually, the only time I really think about gear is while I'm practicing. Maybe I need to worry more...

That's not fair! This is like saying that if someone comes out with Imitation Apples -they should be compared to real apples and ah,er, ......wait......never mind- good point.

Actually I've been really impressed with clips of the Axe and especially Axe 2 though, really nice harmonic structure ( where you can hear upper harmonics ringing clearly within the tones, etc. ) that I used to think only tubes could do.

And the Inventor deserves a lot of credit for being the best at what he does- pretty amazing achievement IMO.

I find the debates pretty entertaining sometimes.

worrying removes hair in certain places and puts it back in places it shouldnt be, thus reminding you why you should have bought more gear - its a never ending cycle

As mentioned previously I think the axe shines as a direct box. One has to realize that it is emulating the recorded sound of a mic'd up amp. I once tried to run my axe as a preamp and really hd to change things up settings wise to make it sound good that way. It's possible but out of the box it's really for direct use. Personally it feels the best out of any modeler I have used to date. Axe 2 really seems to be a leap forward as well. Cliff is a genius.
