Anyone use the axe fx for the effects exclusively? I can't find the gear I want for what I think is a reasonable price. I read the axe fx II is the way to go but I want to hear it from you first.

ABSOLUTLY.
If you can score one with or without the footswitch ,do it.
I have different patches that are for F/X only. Ones for running it into a Mesa 295 Power Amp.
And ones for using into my pair of Friedman FRFR 12 inch powered speakers.
The effects are stellar and as tweakable as having 10 different pedals on a board.
I have the Fractal Axe FX II XL+ and the footswitch.

Lol I am fuckin' with ya. Yeah the Axe Fx- Fx sound damn amazing. You can really do almost anything you can imagine with those units these days. It's so far past what I would ever need but, it's all there and all sounds killer. Of course I am no italoop but, yeah.

Yeah, the Axe II is amazing for effects. If anything, I would say it is overkill if you only use a few effects and don't need all the switching, but the effects are top notch.
I have had my Axe II for like 7 or 8 years now. I used it as a main rig, but have kind of moved back to my tube amps lately. I have set it up for the basic Detune/Chorus/Delay/Reverb for the loop, and it works well. However, for me it is complete overkill as I pretty much just keep one setting on all the time in the background at a low mix, lol. I did not like it in 4CM as much. Using it in front of the amp did something I didn't like to the tone and attack.
Although, I do switch it up. In the last year or two I also bought a TC Electronic G Major 2, Rocktron Intellifex, Rocktron Replifex, and Lexicon MPX-1. I just always wanted them and they are cheap now, so why not? lol. I kind of switch back and forth between all these units for the same purpose. They all do what I need for the most part, same as the Axe II. I would say where the Axe II would really shine is in the switching and modern programming.

My main need is a detune, multi voice harmonizer and of course multi tap stereo delays that can do spillover fx that have advanced controls. I mean these would replace the need for a $3k Eventide for a fraction of the cost right?

I use an Axe-FX III with my tube head using 4CM. Primarily for pre effects and loop effects but it's also my backup. If any other piece of gear goes down, I can just plug into the Axe for everything.

I used to use an Axe FX II in 4cm , but I switched to the FX8 Mark II , it's much much quiter in 4cm and it's one unit not 2 (you kinda need the MFC if you're going to be switching stuff on/off) Make sure you get the humbuster cables from Fractal as well. I use mine with my Splawn Super Sport now and it's completely transparent , no hiss at all.

I use my AxeFx III (used my AxeFx II the exact same way) with my amps as well as by itself. Works amazingly well, sounds awesome and can record on the fly if I need to.
Connections:
Gtr-> pedals (OD & EQ) -> amp -> Suhr Reactive Load -> Axe-Fx -> Studio Monitors
Gtr -> Axe Fx -> Studio Monitors
Note: USB from Axe Fx plugs into computer for recording if necessary
I also purchased a Drawmer CMC2 monitor controller that my computer and the AxeFx plug into so they can play through the Monitors at the same time, no need to swap anything.
