AXE FX III - has been announced

I just sold my Kemper because I was running a Soldano preamp in it instead of amp sims, the Kemper was just fx and IRs at that point. Then I got the Synergy2 and ran that in place of the Soldano (though I have the Soldano module). The IRs went bye-bye as I am using the Synergy's speaker emulation.

Currently using the Synergy through a 2290, with a 2 pedals in the loops before the 3rd loop that has the Synergy in it.

Got on the waiting list for the Fractal for fx and routing. May never use the amps sims or IRs. But nice to know they are there for backup. If I end up not liking it I'm sure I could resell with not much of a loss while the waiting list still exists. But I heard the fx are great, and in lieu of an fx only unit this seems a viable option.

Would like to try the virtual boost in the Axe. For me the Synergy gives me a great core tone without tons of tweaking, and still can be very versatile (modules) for any GAS itch, and the Axe would add the ability to change fx and pedals without actually having to rewire or buy fx and pedals.

Crossing fingers...

I've never understood why someone would pay close to new prices for a used Axe FX. Pay $150 more and get a brand new one with warranty, etc..

I'd be in the market for a IIxL+ to use as an effects unit, but I'm thinking $1200 tops, so I may wait till the 3 starts shipping.
Yeah man. I am thinking around Oct/Nov 2018 the fire sales will start and I will scoop an XL+ "just cuz"

The III already has 90% of the features folks have been begging for & it's not even out yet. It's a beast for sure. That's why people will upgrade. Nobody is even really talking about better tones on the forum. It's not something they were asking for because the Axe2 is at a pretty high level in that department. The III will surely raise the tone bar eventually though because Cliff never rests.

Having Cliff with such a powerful new unit to continually work his magic on is a huge reason plenty will buy a III. The guy is simply obsessed with pushing the boundaries & is so hands on with folks on the forum it's crazy. Many times a feature has been requested & Cliff adds it soon after....

Good times....

Well said Scott.

This is directly from Cliff when someone asked about how different the "III" tones are from the "II":

"A little but not drastically. It's a new platform. It will grow over time. It was time for an updated platform. TigerSHARCs are discontinued, the interface was dated, etc. The III is what the II would be if we could've upgraded the hardware via a firmware update."

The Axe-Fx II made me want to play guitar even more than I was already playing. I started getting back into recordings and a lot of times I'll pull up a backing track of some band on YouTube and play along to it. Just has made it very inspiring to play. If I was in a band still, I probably would be so busy with that I'd only use a handful of tones. Since I'm at home recording, I can try different amps out and see what all the fuss is about.

I also use external pedals with my unit. I'll have a Friedman Dirty Shirley amp type up and instead of using one of the internal drives, I'll plug in my Keeley "D&M" pedal and just give it a boost in the front. Sounds amazing! I've said it a million times, I often forget that the Axe-Fx is essentially a computer. I close my eyes and there is an amp there.

I think for current Axe-Fx owners, there really isn't a huge hurry to get one of these. I'm sure a lot of us are going to see what people are saying about them, see what the comparisons are, etc. For a person that was saving up for an XL and just heard this news, this is an awesome thing. :0

I'm waiting for the IV to come out in 2024.

It will have A.I.

You kid but the day is coming (assuming there are still guitar players in 2024) where machine learning and AI algorithms will be used and probably quite effectively.

I hope it can play guitar better than I can. All this practice bullshit is for the birds.

I hear you... though I'm not referring to playing for you, more along the lines of learning about how you play, what your preferences are tone-wise, perhaps even based upon touch sensitivity and volume rollback, the song itself (after you've played it enough times, remembering what you're changing/adjusting) and the list could go on and on.

Damn, check this out. $90!!! I feel plug-ins like this have really improved so much. If you’re a Mesa guy and that’s you’re primary group of amp sims from Fractal and you’re modeler never leaves the bedroom, this at save you a few thousand dollars.

Great, if you need one dry sound/amp. If you need 25 amps plus effects and endless routing or tweaking possibilities though, there's the Axe FX. Ola demos are bad examples, he always sounds like Ola.

One will never win the race to beat technology.

The butthurt and sandpaper vag rash has already started - those who recently purchased the II XL+ are very butthurt. Watch ePay and Reverb - the pages are growing by the hour. Eventually when the XL+ gets to sub $1000, like, maybe $750, I'll buy it for effects. MAYBE.

But the whole thing about updates and FW and editing and the politics with their forum and realerer models is just too nuts for me.

Tube amps. I've got the ones I love. I can't see needing more. I dig the effects and ease of recording with Fractal and Kemper and Helix, but I'll sacrifice that ease for amps that I just get to know "personally".

The Fractal scene is just too weird for me to engage. Always always always a fight for moar betterer realerer FW updates and such. Just gimme my amps. Cheers.

Wait until you get to know them "personally" with nicely placed hernias in three locations like I had. There is something about strategically placed mesh in your body and lack of a bowel movement for a few days that makes you feel like Steve Vai shredding in front of 200,000 people at a festival. Let's not forget the lower abdominal pain that comes and goes over years and years. Enjoy your tube amps though...

LOL, I'm just messing with you man. :) I know how much the Fractal debactle used to piss you off. I used to love the tubes amps I had over the years, especially my Splawn. I get some great tones with my Axe-Fx II and does sound real but tube amps have a few things that you just feel. Hard to explain unless you are sitting in front of a tube amp. There is this low end that hits you in your chest a certain way and a 3D thing you feel. I'm glad that there is this technology though. I do alot of recording and the convienience compared with when I used to mic a cab is just awesome.
