AxeFx insanity....

2010 that will be my big purchuse, made up my mind after Degenaro's slaved videos and of course my gear consultant Ralphie.

Marshalls aint going nowhere though :D

Yes. Seller's remorse since I sold my Ultra. It is overkill for my needs, but so what! For what I used it for it worked extremely well. I'm happy with my Vox ToneLab, but I see an Axe-Fx Standard in my future.

I think you pointed out what was my biggest challenge: not having the real amp to AB my Axe-Fx with. So I was always guessing or approximating...

And yes, once you learn how to use the Axe-Fx effectively, it is near limitless in capabilities IMO (especially the Ultra). I have nothing bad to say about these units, guess when I sold it I was having one of those "momentary lapse of reason" moments.

Since I don't have access to a collection of classic amps, I've collected a few links to clips of amp/cabs demo sounds that I want to duplicate with my set-up; for now I will use my ToneLab to do this until I have the funds for the Standard. Of course, if the ToneLab works for this, well...it may be a longer wait for getting another Axe-Fx, but another one is at the top of my gear acquisition list.

Love mine to death and Im never getting rid of it. Sure, theres amps Id like to try but in the end, Im convinced that everything someone could want is within the AF's ability to reproduce, its up to the user to bring it out. If you cant, it isnt the AxeFx's fault IMO

Kage -

I agree with this 100%. I will admit that having Jason tweaking stuff and already being very into the unit was a huge plus. He was able to quickly dial up tones that worked as soon as I suggested something. Also the realization that Jason could basically email me the patches that he came up with and interesting tweaks is intriguing...cmon, how easy is that ????

How bout' the fact that you can even adjust the tube bias of the amp being moddled ???? at one point we set the XTC patch bias at 73   it sounded KILLER ;)

Danyeo - the Mark IV patches were some of my favorites actually: Sykes in a box
 The Fryette / VHT patches were killer, so were the Dr. Z Maz 38 patches. The ability to run two different amps at the same time hooked me though - you can get a killer clean tone dialed up and run another amp buried in the back for a bit of hair, or run an allout drive patch with some clean mixed in. Really the possibilities are endless with this. I could still see using only a few of the patches in it and being happy with the results.

Even Jason said the first versions of the programs sucked...I'm glad that I got to hear this thing after it was getting up to its real potential. I would imagine that at the pace the firmware is being updated in another year some people will be blown away.

Ejecta - Bogner is stock, there's nothing to change in that amp ;)

This box is a completely viable option. Heh, even my wife was impressed - and she's more jaded than all of us having suffered through my amp ADD

There are only 2 things holding me back from getting one. Time and money. I don't have the funds right now and when I get one I want to have enough time to spend to really dig in. However, I am thinking I may be better to get an Axe-Fx than go for a mesa mark V. By the time I get one there will be a version 2 I bet.

BTW does anyone know have often the firmware is being updated, just curious....

axefx would be at least $500 less and brings a ton more to the table.

Not if you factor in I would get the ultra, want a Foot controller and want to get a power amp (though I could run it through my mark IV for a while). Its not like I have the money for a mesa mark V right now either.

I agree the Axe-Fx can do a lot more than the mark V, so I will probably go that way eventually.

Well, the only way I could get one would be to sell my Bogner, and I'm really struggling with that - so unless that happens I'm drooling with everybody else...as far as time goes, I agree that there is a learning curve but seriously you can have sounds / patches sent to you via email to upload into the unit...you need some sort of basic midi box to transfer apparently. I know for a fact that the XTC Classic patch Jason created is near spot on - "You've got mail" and you've got those tones

Yeah, I was going by a power amp was already in place and no foot controller.

That's cool, but seriously, if your buddy Jason had it for a while now, I'd really like to know at what version he though it didn't suck any more and if he meant as far as effects or the amp modeling.

Also, my Classic is not modded - see no reason to mess with that...I'll let you know though if its gonna go...Wallis gets first crack at it though.

Axe-FX Ultra + 7.04 firmware = The Shit.

If you are a tone freak who digs tweaking and needs a large variety of killer tones, get one.

Steve

P.S. - Dweezil Zappa's latest Eruption preset he posted at Axechange sounds EXACTLY like the VH I album with my old Kramer guitar w/Mojave pickup recorded direct.... Very nice use of the MBC to tweak it to the album and the plexi cab impulses make a HUGE difference... I also dig how he used the pitch shifter to downtune 1/2 step. You can use a guitar tuned standard with this presest and simply kick in the pitch shifter to get to E flat... nice... If you have an Ultra and enjoy VH I tone, I highly recommend it... I'm gonna do a VH I clip with it, but not Eruption... too many of those already...

I hate to say it, but the AxeFX is the very reason I sold that Cameron to you............
After A/Bing the AxeFX's preamp to the Cameron preamp through it's own power section.....well you know what happened next.

Not to discount that 101b what so ever, it's a baaaaaaad ass amp for sure. The Axe can get 98% of the way there with the 101b's power section behind it. I've got a early VHT 2/50/2 on it's way (can run 6l6 & el34), so we'll see if it gets me back to that same tone/feel as the 101b power section did.

DAMN!!!!!!

Two guys thinking or flat out dumping XTCs for the axefx!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Done fucking deal, I needs me a standard

That's cool...but I'm honestly not much of a tweaker. I've been happy as hell with trying various tube amps over the years, (especially your old XTC) and I'm pretty much of the mind set of keep it simple and if it ain't broke, don't fix it...
