Wow, my SL2 sounds nothing like that. I actually don't use the bright switch but will use the bass switch on occasion, maybe on 1. A lot of my problems were solved when I got the Randall MTS 212 cabinet with Celestion Neo speakers. Even the band noticed and said the the clarity is now unreal and we sound huge. The cab makes a big difference. I think the SL2 is perfect as is.
Plus, get some EL34s or E34Ls in that bad boy. The 5881s sound to cardboardy to me! Matt is gonna kill me.
I am just an EL34/E34L whore! Nothing gives me the thick mid crunch or singing mids like 34s. I will say though that i am using 6550s biased hot and they too sound really good!
Also, I find the amp to harsh if I run the presence past about 10:00 at high volumes.

I am currently running a stock Mod 50 with 5881s into an SL2 module and am looking for some tonal suggestions. Plugging a Les Paul straight into head and into a 2x12 Mesa with V30s.
Basically I have to run with the bright setting on 2 so it doesn't sound like there is a blanket over the speakers. The bass is a little more round than I would prefer. It could be tighter/thicker.
Plenty of gain - no problem there. One could single out the cab but my Mesa F-50 with 6l6s definately has thick bass and a sparkly top - what the egnater lacks. Unfortunately my Mesa lacks a marshally sound plus I am looking for more versatitly.
I have listened to clips of other modules and it seems like the egnater stuff doesn't have the highs and lows I am looking for. I can turn the bass/density up but it just gets more rounded/muffled.
I have searched for info on 6550s and the GNR mod but do not know how much these will change the tone relative to what I am looking for. I am also looking for something that cleans up extremely well. Looking for suggestions of all kinds.
Well, if you like cardboard crunch Matt, then by all means, go for it.
I kidd......I kidd.......
You know what they say, one man's gold is another's junk. I think that is what a lot of us experience. Some guys dig EL34s, some 6L6s, etc. It's all good in my mind. Whatever makes you play better, I always say. I'll say this, I saw the Cult the other night. LP into Marshall JCM800 with EL34s. HUGE!
