there are bands where the rythm guitarist or second guitarist, or even the singer who occasionally plays guitar, owns the lead guitarist......be it feel, or creativity, or sometimes (although rare) technicality.

IMO here are some bands that fit, I'd like to hear your thoughts and opinions too

Metallica: I don't have anything against Kirk, I like his playing most of the time, but it's fair to say James is a better guitarist (more creative, has more soul etc)

Machine Head: I prefer Rob's playing

Megadeth: I prefer Dave's stuff over any other lead guitarist he's had.

Gotta disagree with the Megadeth statement..
Chris Broderick is by far a better guitar player than Dave.
Absolutely and Chris Poland SMOKED Dave as well

Remember it's not only in the Technical department....it applies to taste, feel, originality, etc.

I like dave's creativity when it comes to guitar playing.

Gracias mi hermano pero no necesito recordar. Chris Poland es mucho mejor que Dave por todos

I am going to have to re-rank some of your senseless statements after this. Can't beat Rust In Peace, although Dave is really good, can't say as he outshines Friedman.

Best case of that is Def Lep...Campbell smokes Collen.

On what  The first 2 Dio albums? Can't really compare that. I had some new hope for DL once he joined, but nothing yet.

Best guitar player on record for DL is Pete Willis.

Alter Bridge. Myles has better tone and feel/phrasing than Tremonti.

I second that.

On a slightly different topic...

When I saw Steve Vai, he had Eric Sardinas warming up for him. He put on a much better show than Vai did. He was captivating.

When Sardinas later came out to play with Vai, he also walked right over him.

Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull over Martin Barre. Not necessarily "owning" him, which i'm really not a fan of that word when it comes to artists/musicians in general. Ian's acoustic stuff was soooo brilliant musically speaking.

Yes. Marty always was my favorite.

+1

Vivian Campbell was great in the Riverdogs. Killer SLO rock guitar.

Howzabout "singers who smoke the lead guitarists?" Back in '92-'95, Me and another guitarist both played lead in a thrash band called "Fear Itself." We needed a singer and couldn't find anyone that we dug. So my buddy Joel Hoekstra, who now plays for Night Ranger, Rock of Ages, and Trans Siberian Orchestra said he'd do it. Well, he tried it out, fucking killed it (as he pretty much killed at anything that pertained to music) and ended up singing for us for about a year. So for a year or so, we had a singer that destroyed us both on guitar. Not exactly a boost to the old ego.

AEROSMITH
DAmn, beat me to it.... Brad>Joe in SPADES

THIS!!!

Every time I have seen them live, I walk away wondering why people think so highly of Joe.....I get that he has the whole cool vibe going, but listening to them play, there just isn't any comparison. ;)
