Alter Bridge. Myles has better tone and feel/phrasing than Tremonti.

Nirvana... The Drummer was better then both guitars players, and they knew it...

there are bands where the rythm guitarist or second guitarist, or even the singer who occasionally plays guitar, owns the lead guitarist......be it feel, or creativity, or sometimes (although rare) technicality.

IMO here are some bands that fit, I'd like to hear your thoughts and opinions too

Metallica: I don't have anything against Kirk, I like his playing most of the time, but it's fair to say James is a better guitarist (more creative, has more soul etc)

Machine Head: I prefer Rob's playing

Megadeth: I prefer Dave's stuff over any other lead guitarist he's had.

Gotta disagree with the Megadeth statement..
Chris Broderick is by far a better guitar player than Dave.
Absolutely and Chris Poland SMOKED Dave as well

Remember it's not only in the Technical department....it applies to taste, feel, originality, etc.

I like dave's creativity when it comes to guitar playing.

  How'd we all miss that one.

Man, some of you guys are just silly and ridiculous. :D

Nobody "owns" Steve Vai or Angus Young. :m17:

Oh, and for what it's worth, I was watching that Megadeth concert on Paladia and I preferred Dave's guitar work by a mile over Broderick. Waaay more character, and better tone. Can't say that about Poland or Friedman though.

No one's mentioned Pearl Jam yet. Stone Gossard is a far better and more versatile musician than McCready... and wrote most of the stuff (if i remember correctly). There's my vote.

oh wait... and every era of The Black Crowes other than Marc Ford / Rich Robinson.
Marc Ford = Rich Robinson
Audley Freed < Rich
Luther Dickenson < Rich

No doubt. I saw them last summer and everything he did, he did well. His playing was right on, good tone, sang great, plus played piano and sax. He was way better than I expected.

James Hetfield from Metallica for me. Well, James was/is a great inspiration for me to pick up the guitar in the first place, and what influenced me to lean towards rhythm guitar rather than lead.

And also, Malcolm Young from AC/DC. I do really respect and love Angus's musicianship and stage antics, but to me Malcolm and his rhythm sound are the meat and potatoes of their music. It's such a driving force. And some of the BEST Marshall tone of all- particularly on their TNT album back in 1975.

+1.

And I'll agree on the Hetfield sentiments.

+1 here as well, though it's arguable exactly who's considered 'second guitarist' in this band. I know Mikael does the vast majority of the writing, and more than half the solos....

I guess back in the day they shared the love, but I always got the impression Brad Gillis was lead, Watson second, but ummm, IMO, Jeff Watson > Brad Gillis!
