So does this thing have to be loud to get gain?? It’s got a gain and master knob but seems like in reviews I’m reading the master has to be high to get any gain.

The one I played had a mild amount of preamp gain, but yeah you had to crank it to get anywhere past Malcom young levels of grit.

I have one of the 50's that I modded.
You have the have the master high and drive the power amp into saturation to get like that crunch like gain, I think that is why they have the power scaling feature so you do that so you don't have to have the amp super loud to get the power amp working, otherwise it's pretty clean.
