I know this sounds retarded but i'm just so burned out with the tube craze when it pertains to modern metal. It seems like every damn amp is just a copy of another and all of them sound so similar it's ridiculous.

All 'modern metal' bands in the 80's used JCM800's or JMP's with Celestion 65's (until Master of Puppets, I think), and they managed to release albums that still wipe the floor with today's metal.

I'm also sick of certain pickups, amps and speakers (Always hated EMG 81's, Rectos and V30's). I hate the fact that every 'modern metal' rig is a guitar with an EMG 81 in the bridge into a Maxon OD808 into a 5152/5153/Recto or ENGL Powerball if it's a European band. Just devoid of color.

I like this guy!
Active pickups + overdrive + crappy recto = :lame:
No personality at all. More gain for the sake of having more gain is just silly. Just masking sloppy playing for the most part. That's one reason I give kudos to Lamb of God, less gain, great playing as far as modern metal goes.

I'm all about high gain, but it MUST have clarity. That's what makes me love my Soldano SLO ripoff. I use a bridge pup with an A2 alnico magnet. I'm selling my ceramic Warpig because it's too much. I get absolutely crushing distortion with my setup, yet I can hear every note in an arpeggio. I'm admittedly old school in general, but I love bands like LoG mentioned here an Mastodon. Great, brutal tone, but not too much gain, plenty of cutting clarity.
