Best delay for SLO loop?

I have a SLO with the original loop - what delay unit will sound best? I have an SDE3000, and a Chandler Echo. Also an old Ibanez Soundtank Echomachine.

Yeah, I figured at least the SDE3000 should be fine with it, considering that's what was popular back when the SLO came out.

I tried several high end line level delays in my old SLO and didn't care for any of them. The tone just isn't the same

TC Electronics Flashback works great. But you need to disable true bypass and enable the return buffer so the signal stays string. Most TC Electronic Pedals have a Return buffered output that can be switched on, by default it is off set to true bypass.

The issue with the SLO beside the line level loop, is the loop is before the tone stack, so the tone stack effects the loop (effects signal)

Disclaimer: I HAVE NOT owned a Strymon pedal myself yet. However, I have heard they are a good option for the SLO loop since they have the weird quirks others have already correctly mentioned in this thread. The Strymon delays have a dry signal through that does not go through AD/DA conversion, so only the delay amount you blend in with the mix level goes through AD/DA. Also, the Strymon pedal specs show they handle up to 7db signal level IRRC. So, for what it's worth, it's an option worth considering and I am considering it myself. Again, I haven't tried it yet though.

Used Blue Sky in the loop!!!! Great. TC flashback was great also.

I tried my Strymon Timeline through my SLO and although it wasn't bad, the timeline was stunning through most of my other amps. Actually thought my Carbon copy sounded better through the SLo than my Timeline. The Timeline is a stunning unit, and maybe there is a switch or toggle I could have engaged to make it sound better, but my experience with it and the SLO was not that great. (that is just plugging it into the loop and ripping through some of its preset delays. ) again, it sounded absolutely stunning through my MC2, CCV, and others. My .02

Back when I was running an SLO, I used an X3 Live as my entire effects suite in the loop, with the line level pads. Worked fine for live, though I would use an El Cap now as I really think having analog pass-through makes a big difference in the quality and dynamics of the tone.

The issue with the SLO loop is not the level of the signal. There are plenty of pedal delays and rack delays out there that can work with whatever signal you might be working with (line level, effects level, instrument level, etc.). The issue has more to do with WHERE the loop is placed in the overall circuit. And no external gear can address that. It doesn't matter what pedal or rack unit you use, time-based effects will never sound "right" in the loop of the SLO. Some might sound better than others of course. But really the ONLY way you're going to get "clean" and "wet" sounding delay with this amp is to use the Slave Out and run a wet/dry setup.

This is a broken record sort of comment, I know. The SLO has been around for decades. And I don't think anybody's found a better solution outside of rewiring the loop to be placed after the tone stack.

The SLO loop sucks. I run a HOF Mini in my SLO's loop and my Boss DD-3 out front. It sounds great that way. But I have to rearrange my pedalboard when using one of my other heads, as their loops are great and some pedals sound much more robust in their loops.

I don't know the answer, my loop in my 95' SLO is a John Suhrs installed loop and it is pretty freaking good!
I think I remember getting decent results with a flashback with my 1st SLO with stock loop?

I liked my intellifex through my old SLO. But, the tone was noticeably better when I ran dry. Just like most amps the fx loop is a tone sucker. I've never heard an amps loop that didn't change the tone somewhat. No matter what fx unit is used. Slaving is the only way to truly preserve the amps tone while using fx.

Get a fryette power station and be done with loops on your amps.

I use a G-lab SD-1 Smooth Delay in my SLO effects loop and it sounds great!!
