The Axe is tough to beat, but another option to consider would be using impulse files with your current gear. Redwirez or OwnHammer impulses with LeCab or Voxengo might just suit you.

+1

I owned three of those AMT Legend series pedals. They are awful, but I've heard good things about the SS pedals.

Best thing to do is use your preamp with cab impusle
via attenuator line-out or something like the suhr iso

Pete Thorn is using the Faustine Phantom attenuator line-out for his DI recording tracks with impulses from RedWirez.

Another vote for the Eleven Rack. I just did a demo in a Pro Tools studio direct with the 11R last week. Vocals are done now, so I should have a mix in the next week or two. Will be posting the tunes when I do. I've got a friend who owns a music store and has owned or played just about everything. He had an Axe-Fx Standard for a while and sold it cause he prefers his Eleven Rack. He uses it direct for live and recording. His racked Soldano/VHT rig doesn't get used any more. I still prefer my XTC and VHT Ultra Lead for live work, but the 11R is pretty awesome for direct stuff.
