Best SG that is NOT a Gibson

I am looking to hire a Doughboy style guitar player, but do not want to hire the actual Doughboy due to his lack of quality playing & musicianship.

Which other players out there, that look like Doughboy, but can actually play?

If it was about a person. Is that a blanket statement? Seem like it? Yep.

You started a flame war.

If you can see a flaw in every SG within your grasp, why can't you see that.

I have owned and tried alot of new Gibson SG's (incl. VOS), and they all felt and sounded thin. Almost like the body were made out of plastic.

I best experience is with early 70's SG's.

Love's me a good Gibson SG. When a find a good deal on a used white standard I'll be all over it.

Another maker you might want to consider that isn't obvious is Jackson Custom Shop. They will make whatever you want and it will be expensive but the quality will be superb. I'll never forget a custom shop, Jackson Firebird I tried at a late 90's NAMM with a chunky neck. It was absolutely flawless in finish and playability. If I had the money I would get them to make me an Explorer or V with a reverse headstock that had that same chunky neck.

You don't have to drop a ton of coin. I picked up an SG Special Faded Worn Brown for $450 and it's killer. Nice fat 50's style neck and great pickups. Find a used one and tear it up!!

I don't understand why this concept is so hard to understand either.

I mean, I own 9 Strats & none are Fenders. I just want a higher level of quality of instrument & there are plenty of other brands that fit the bill, so I took my money else where. Nothing against Fender, I've owned lots of them in the past, but I wanted more exotic wood, SS frets, boutique PUs, better hardware etc

For an SG guitar...not so many choices, hence my post.

Some people are slaves to brand. You MUST play a Gibson if you want a LP or SG. You MUST play a Fender if you want a Tele etc. Nonesense!!!!
