hmm let me guess. One starts with S. Ends with tastic. The other starts with E. Ends with 757.

Both of your customs look sexy but holy funk, that tele is insane. That is one gorgeous neck.

The B2 does have fancy woods. I'd say all of the B2 models were crafted from the absolute best woods Doug could lay his hands on. They're wicked guitars, but the materials and build costs don't really correlate with what people buy and sell them for now on the used market.

When you play a natural finish, bolt on guitar with a pointy head that costs 12 grand+ used, it's easy for anyone to be underwhelmed I think. But they are hand made I 'think'. Like the Ken Lawrence etc. There's certainly some intrinsic value in knowing that a skilled guy took his time and personally put his everything into making something as best he could. That's where the whole CNC machine debate begins of course, which I don't personally buy into when pretty much all premium guitars are ultimately hand finished.

Doug doesn't have much of a say about the price and demand of his existing guitars. He never sold them at that price back in the day. The subjective value and hype is beyond his control, though arguably created by their rarity and apparent closing of the workshop.

I think there was one that Bulb bought that was the definitive B2 I read. That must have been hard to let go of and I can only assume Doug must've needed some cash and put that guitar humbly in the hands of someone public who'd use it, display it, film it, love it, glorify it etc.
The amount the B2 goes for on the used market, I'm not entirely convinced you can't approach Doug directly still and get him to build you a brand new one. It's cool though if he's not driven to build guitars just for the cash.

I only regret not ordering one back in the day. I'd consider hawking it off and buying several amazing custom guitars. Anderson, Suhr, PRS, Fibenare. Take your pick. All will be one of a kind

I hadn't even heard of Blackmachine until I read some posts here from people saying it was the best guitar they'd ever played, ever made etc.

I didn't like the shape & the price was silly so I didn't keep up on the thread.

My friend, who's a guitar nut & has way too much money, bought one mainly because of the hype & how rare they are. All you have to do is make something hard to get & he wants one.

I really can't understand these guitars. They're very ordinary for any price, let alone $10k+.

What exactly is the story behind the hype? Did some people get a bunch for cheap & then hype them online to drive up the price to make a profit? did the luthier who made them die? I'm really curious as to why such ordinary guitars have so much hype & myth around them, when after playing one, I walked away totally unimpressed & a wee bit disgusted.

So much misinformation in this thread.

The guitar you played is a B6, which isn't very expensive - about $3.5k - and isn't very hyped. There's always the random kid upgrading from some entry level Ibanez that is totally blown away buy it and raves about it being the best guitar they've ever played, but generally speaking the B6s are just considered good guitars. They're made by Jon @ Felix Guitars in the UK, not by Doug, hence, not the hype.

The hype is probably a number of factors:
- 1. Played by Misha & Nolly, and as Periphery popularity rose and these guys are noted gear heads, their opinion helped drive up the price. Similarly, barely anyone was playing BKP at that time, and now look at them!
- 2. Doug. Doug is nearly impossible to get ahold of or deal with. Custom builds took a long time. By the time these guitars were on everyone's want list, there was no way to order them. It's a bit of a Dumble factor.
- 3. Online flipping. There was a lot of online hype built up to turn profits on these guitars, but that was done by people who bought them second hand, and not by Doug. Doug has even stated his dismay at what's happened with the guitar prices. That said, these days you're not going to get a new guitar from Doug for less than $10k, and probably not much less than double that.
- 4. Lack of competition. In the prog/metal scene there weren't a lot of handmade/high-end guitar options. Now production companies really cater heavily to that market (lots of sig instruments and pickups for prog/metal bands), and companies like Mayones -- who were not really internationally successful prior to this -- have stepped up to fill the void.

But as to OP, realize that you're not even playing a guitar made by the same guy that makes the rare, hyped up, expensive guitars. You might as well have played a Suhr and then walked away saying you don't understand what the Blackmachine hype is about -- different instruments.

fantastic guitars, not worth 10K IMO but that's the used market that has driven it up.

Most of the guys that play them could just use a broomstick with one string on it for the music the play....

Wrong. I own a B6 and have played a B2: they are magic. They are not, however, the be-all-and-end-all guitar. I reach for my PRS's most of the time to scratch that itch.

I heard the wood came from trees from the forests of Fangorn in Middle Earth.

I have a few custom built instruments that cost 1/4 of the price that I think look, play & sound much better.

What do you have? I GAS for more GAS

Here are a couple of my custom jobs. Both, imo, are better looking, sounding & playing than the Blackmachine. But I'm biased so disregard what I just said.

who built your customs? you didn't answer the first time I asked.

Huh, you learn something new every day. I always thought the wood came from one of the trees the Keebler elves live in.
