Blown Speakers?

I had a mishap last weekend, where I accidentally hit bypass on my RP1000, which blasted at stupid loud volume! Well, shortly thereafter, my speakers sounded farty. I'm pretty sure it blew the Greenbacks up top, and maybe the V30's below. My amp volume was way up past 1/2, as I use the expression pedal for volume. So, if bypassed, it's the full brunt of the power amp, which, well, about took my head off.

Question is, if I check continuity with an ohm meter, would I get a reading at all? I did buy new speakers, and ironically enough, I now need the G12T-75's, as I know they're good, they werent in the cab. I put those in, and bought 2 new Greenbacks, which is why I was seeking help wiring. I think I've been using it for some time wired incorrectly as well!

I had 2 V30's in there with the Greenbacks, but I think they're fucked too. I just wanted to put a meter on all the bad ones before I dumpster them.
Just waiting for the new Greenbacks to get back up and running..

But, back to my original question.. if I check them with a meter, of course no reading is self-explanatory, but would I still get a reading if they're fucked?

Yes. A very low number would be they're toast. I wire my cabs series/parallel. There's plenty on the net on how to do it but damn, you have all the luck don't you...

I've got the wiring sorted, just waiting to get the cab back together.

This one was my own stupidity!

100w amp?

My friend blast his 100w plexi I built him through a GB/V30 4x12 gigging every weekend for the last two years. He has the PPIMV up about 75%, No blown speakers.

I doubt you blew anything, especially not the v30's

I was thinking the same. Further back into the wiring...think of the two left speakers and then the two on the right. I wire the left set in series then the right set the same way, then parallel the wires from each set at the jack. Any more trouble and you'll have to change your screen name and go acoustic Napalm. Good luck!

No, it was my 45 watt Randall!

The # would be lower if u popped 'em, not to say you haven't damaged them.

No chance you blew those speakers with that amp.

I just tried blowing mine with more power...I guess I'll have to try harder when I get my IIC++ Coliseum back in a few weeks hahaha

Aren't those like 200 watts?

I haven't put a meter on the Greenbacks, but the V30's seem to be fine. Is it possible they read what they should, but still messed up? I suppose it could see if they were ripped or something, but they look structurally fine.

He has a mid 70s GB cab like I do...and I ran my Coliseum through it last week and pushed it a bit too much, they sounded amazing and are still kicking. I regularly ran my Wizard through it as well, no worries. Plus the cab is beat to shit, it got lots of airplay over the years I'm sure. That's why I don't buy that your 45w Randall did anything to them.
Probably a wiring issue.

Beyond that if they aren't blown when they take the hit and it's too much I've had speakers give off a tone in a specific frequency that is all by itself, at that point it's over. I wish I knew what that was, maybe it is the coil/rub? Who knows?

I wired it correctly, put in the (2) G12T-75's I had in the bottom, and (2) new Greenbacks. I put in all new hardware, (tee nuts, and mounting bolts). Everything is mounted solid, and it's definitely wired correctly...

It sounds absolutely PUNISHING. I've had it 3 years, and it's never sounded so good. Safe to say, the wiring was out of whack. But, it was only part of the problem, that was compounded by what else was going on. The Randall had a short in V3 tube socket! So, it's been replaced. However, as shitty as luck would have it, I never would have looked into the speakers and investigated the wiring. I couldn't be happier. I feel like I got a brand new cabinet, and the Randall was replaced with a new one. I have to say, things definitely happened for a reason with this one! And, as much as I like the Randall, and will have a new one delivered tomorrow, the Yeti is off the market. It sounds absolutely INSANE through this cab!

I feel like a total idiot though. That cabs been wired wrong for 2 years, and there's a number of amps that didn't get a fair shot through it!

Oh man no wonder you've had issues being happy with any amp. Well now you hear the real amps, not some out of whack tone. Glad you figured it out.

Exactly. Shows how much cabs impact the overall tone!
