Bonamassa pretty much owns Zakk Wylde here.

I remember when he first came out saying how he took classical lessons because he wanted to show up all the Jazz heads that hung around his local music store...what the hell happened ? I think him and Dime just dumbed everything down to appeal to the masses during the Korn/Limp Bizkit phase, well thank Christ that shit is over, so you can come out of hiding now Jeffery Wylant !

On the other hand, I'm glad to see Joe B getting up there in the rankings - he payed plenty of dues in small bars and clubs all over NJ (that's how I remember him).

I just watched it again, way bad. Tried to find something in his solo that I liked, horrible solo, bad tone IMO.

Really don't know where along the line, how
Zakk forgot how to play Guitar?!
He used to play in Modes, had a Few signature
Tricks' and could do some Mean, Rock"a"Billy
Chicken Pickin', that would've fit right in the
structure of that Cream Tune.
Yup, The BLS (Bum, Loser, Scum) look is OLD!!!
He needs to reinvent that tired old schtick.

Joe on the other hand, is CLASS, TONE, STYLE
on two legs!!! What a serious case of "OUTCLASSED"
in every sense of the word....compared to the High
School Talent Show Reject Zakk.
Time to give Pride and Glory another Shot,
Biker Dunce!!

Sound like the same solo Zakk plays in every song. Full bore, all the time. But, he's hardcore brutality, right?

And you figure the song is knee deep in Joes wheelhouse...he has probably solo'd over that same tune with 100 different guitarists while I am sure Zak hasnt had to play over that since he was 15 years old, taking his first guitar lessons...so here he was about as far out of his comfort zone than if it would have been a jazz trio....LOLOL I just think its cool he even got up there in the first place....

Also, figure Joes whole setup is designed to cut through that exact set, has been perfected over 20 years to sound optimum in that exact environment, whereas Zak prolly showed up, said throw a rectifier up there and a fifth of Jack, and I am ready to roll...

Has anyone considered the possibility that Zack maybe couldn't hear himself well here? Have any of you been in a situation like this, or played on a stage that size? If you walk away from your amp (and there's no wedge in front of you), you're gone. He might not have been coming through any of the monitors on stage.

My guess is that he couldn't hear himself well, which is why he might have run back over to where his amp might have been. Or that he wasn't in the monitors. Or that he didn't get a sound check and so was perhaps not eq'd properly in the house. Lots of potential ways to not hear yourself or not sound your best.

I could say possibly but Zakk recently did a couple late night with
Sit in gigs with house bands playing pretty basic
Stuff that Zakk insisted needed his sig mess note barage of
Pinchs and squeals just didn't even compute with what
The band played.
I wonder if he has gone tone deaf along the way myself.

No. Sorry. That's a horrible excuse for a world class guitar player that only has to play licks in the key of A for a few bars over Crossroads.
Doesn't even matter if you know the song.

Maybe if he shut off the chorus pedal he would of heard himself better?

Bonamassa should have walked over and just shut Zakk's amp off...let him freak out like a fack 'tard !

I'll always have a special place in my heart for "The Zakk years w/Ozzy" but short of that he's been off my radar since like 92. Kudos to him if he was happy being up there with Bonamassa but it was painful to watch and even more painful to listen to.

I am not even a fan of Zakk Wylde but damn you guys are brutal. lol. It was pretty bad, not going to make excuses up for him other than he was probably loaded.

Like many others I was a big Zakk fan but I have to admit that 1:46 - 2:25 just killed his appearance for me. After listening to Joe's soloing there is just no comparison for me. I know both are known for differing styles but damn, it was hard to listen to Zakk during that performance. On the other hand, Joe flat out killed it as one would expect. He was totally in his element. Throughout the video I wanted more Joe and no Zakk. Someone ring the gong!

If anything, this is an example that hi gain metal just doesn't sound as good as lo/mid gain on bigger stages. It gets messy real fast.

If i had watched that with my eyes shut, i could've believed that was Zakk Wylde VS Eric Johnson :D

All jokes aside, I'm a big fan of Zakk but he really didn't sound great there at all.. totally out of his element IMO. If this had been Pride And Glory era Zakk, i think it would've been great as his style was bluesier back then.. but he is so musically different nowadays and he just doesn't fit in playing anything other than metal now.

Joe kicked ass though, very tasty lead playing and sweet tone. At the end of the day, it's not a contest.. just two dudes jamming together on stage. I'm sure they both had a great time!
