Bray 100 Marshalls?

A Splawn in 1st gear will do VH pretty well, Suhr SE or PT heads will also do the hot rodded Marshall tone as well

A stock superlead can be hit or miss they all sound different, can be enough gain for VH but probably not over the top gain without using a boost

Splawn in 1st gear..

You can do much better than Bray and for less money. I had a 1987x that he modded. Sounded ok but never like his clips. He uses an old cab with pre-rola Celestions. I say but the Mojave Peacemaker in the classifieds and call it a day.
This..or check out the Valvetech Suplex....1500 for a new 50 watt with VH tones. Great price for a new modded plexi style amp!
I think a Bray will get you there but Racerxrated has a good point there, can't beat that price for a brand new amp.

I had a mod I done a loooong time ago when he first started offering the mod... sounded pretty good, I don't like PPIMV's anymore though. The amp could certainly do VH to classic metal and more with a boost.

I love my Quickrod. That thing is a monster.

Spawn QR is simply a killer amplifier. Cuts the head off, shits down the marshals throat, and leaves it for dead in the street.

Nope.  Splawns make a good doorstop....cmon Splawn police...take the bait...you're almost as bad as the 5153 police...

Sirens sirens. Black and whites rolling up everywhere.
Hands in the air.... Or get shot. ( some tasteless humor on ongoing police problems lol )

Splawns are the answer to modern Marshall fails.

I've played an el34 Nitro and owned 2 Splawn modded marshalls. Decent amps. But a good Vintage Marshall with a boost is my choice over a Splawn. As far as Modern Marshalls go the only one I've owned is a KK. And yes I'd take that tone over a Splawn too. But Splawns sound good and are versatile......but a good vintage Marshall shits all over the Splawn. Sorry.

Why not just get a Plexi? I've got a stock Germino Lead 55LV that can easily cop those tone and it's got plenty of gain on tap. Here's a clip. I'm not playing a strat style guitar or in the style of EVH but you get the idea of the amount of gain it's capable of.

Wow that is the most gain I have ever heard from a Germino! Is that what all the low voltage leads sound like?

A good classic vintage Marshall imo shits on everything...

I don't deny the fact about having a vintage model. I'm dying to get a 1959HW. I wouldn't compare any other amp against a classic marshall.
My argument is the modern marshalls...

I forgot about the KK. Yes, I agree, the KK imo is their best modern model to date. Had a jvm and never really got with it.
The other one would be the YJM imo. Kick ass Marshall tone !! Okay.. the jubilee as well. But I dont really look at that as a modern tone. Just a hot rodded 800 I guess.

Splawn QR is the amp !!!!

I haven't tried a QR..would like to. The clips I hear are great. People used to talk about the mids...I don't hear anything weird about them. And I would say that for about 1k used they are a great deal. I just grabbed an '81 JCM 800 Bass head...different than the super bass of the 70s..no gain totally clean preamp. Got it today, 600 bucks...just got done double boosting it and its early Maiden tones all day. I just love to play anything Marshally...if I ever see a QR at any local Guitar Center I'm gonna have to try it..

Yep that's it. All the clips I heard before I got it were lower to mid gain so I was pretty surprised too when I first fired it up. Good stuff.

  You're kidding right. I've owned probably 4-5 plexi's, re-issues and originals and played many more and they were all flamethrowers. Some by 2 on the dial, some by 5-6. Definitely gain and presence high, bass low should get you in hard rock nirvana on any plexi. For one to have been clean to 10 there must have been something very wrong. That's of course unless you consider Scorpions clean and Dismember "crunchy"... ;)

Not at all. :gethim:

I have played two SLP's - one original loaded with 6550's and the other which was mentioned above. Neither could come close to anything regarding a crunch channel and were either clean to 10 (above) or blues at best (original). Just looking for the van halen bag of tricks without EQ's, boost pedals, no special order transformers post-purchasing, no variacs, and just plug in and play. I simply don't have the time or the desire to tweak.

Thanks for the Mojave suggestion - seems Pat even owned one at one time based on youtube vids :)

It's nice to know that out of the 10 or so marshalls mentioned in this topic alone, I have managed to play two complete steaming piles of crap. Hopefully I can someday play one of these flamethrowers you guys are mentioning.

I think these are pretty hard to beat for the money.

I have a Bray 4550 Deluxe- the plexi channel is what I used for the video below...it kills at classic VH. The plus channel has more gain on tap and can do any 80's hair band type up to just short of the modern detuned death metal shit.

Eh, for the same price you can get a 70's 1959.

Yes you can. I had a Fawn '77 super lead last fall, 999 at a GC in Chicago. But then an SLO had to pop up locally for 2k. So I returned it...if you're patient there are good deals out there. There's another 77 Marshall, a 2203, on GC.com, I think for 1100....
