I'm building an SLO clone. Thinking about getting a Soldano 2x12 with Eminence Legends to go with it. Thing is, I currently have a Bogner 2x12 with V30s. Probably won't sound that great with an SLO. I live in CA, and back home at my folks' house in CT I have two cabs in storage that I haven't used in a long time: Bogner 4x12 loaded with G12-65s, a Mesa 2x12 with V30s, and a quad of Greenbacks that originally came in the Bogner. I'll be home in about a month for a wedding. And I could ship out the two cabs and speakers back to me here in Cali.

Not sure how much it will cost to ship. Probably a lot. Should I do that or buy a used Soldano 2x12?

Part of me doesn't want to just let these cabs sit in storage, unused. But the other part of me thinks it's a crazy hassle to ship them.

This qualifies as a first world problem :) Haha

All jokes aside... you are probably looking at a couple of hundred bucks for shipping - my guess.

With a SLO/clone I'd go with some EV12L's and Alnico SRO's .

Sell the cabs here in CT, then buy one back home in Cali instead of shipping?

What are SROs?

I've thought about the EV12Ls. But I need a cab to put them in (regardless of what speakers I choose). ;) So do I grab a Soldano (front-loaded), or ship my Bogner and Mesa back to me?

Do they make EV12Ls for front loaded cabs?

Hmm, that would depend on whether or not I can find the cab I'm looking for back here in Cali. And find one for the same price I sold mine for. I'll only be back in CT for one day. Not sure I'll have time to sell the cab locally unless I have a buyer already lined up who can pick it up on that one day. Seems iffy.

My sloclone sounds great in a thiele cab with 1 evm12l, I went with the 300 watter, ya know - just in case :)

Here's a pair of them -

Electro-Voice.

I love my Marshall V30s in my Bogner 412 with my SLO clone at moderate volumes. But if I'm going full-bore, I prefer my EVH-loaded Bogner. I know the Marshall-flavored V30's are a bit different, but don't count out the V30s entirely.

Interesting.

Hmmm... one of my favorite SLO clips actually is with a Diezel cab loaded with V30s and... the Diezel Eminence speakers I believe. So maybe you're right. :)

There's also this clip with a Bogner 2x12 and WGS ET65s, which I guess would be similar to my G12-65s.

I have an original Marshall 1960 loaded with G12-65 Marshall labeled speakers. With ANY of my amps, it's the best cab hands down. Especially with my SLO. Send your G12 65 cab back. It kills with mine..

I've never played through G12-65s before. What do you guys like about them? How do they compare to Greenbacks or V30s?

Yeah, I'm gonna do that before buying another cab. I can always grab a Soldano 2x12 if one pops up used. But there is one right now in great condition on eBay. Price is a little high for my taste though. There's also a 4x12 for $500 at GC. Not sure that's worth it either.

They are Greenbacks (G12M-25) with a larger dust cover and more power handling. So they have that GB sound, but a little darker, with smoother highs and tighter lows. They sound a little muffled and fuzzy at low volumes. But when pushed with some volume, they get very piano-like and musical.

Do they still break up like GBs, or not because they can handle more power? I love that GB breakup in the low-end. The highs are kinda blah, tho.

They are 65 watt speakers, similar to V30s in terms of how they respond to power and break up.

I've always liked Soldano amps with V30's.

"Soldano amps" is different from "SLO." I've heard that the other amps, like the Hot Rod series for example, sound good with V30s and that the SLO is too bright for them. I would think the SLO sounds great with speakers that emphasize the lower mid range and have a tight low-end because the SLO with depth mod can put out too much bass and the amp already has a very bright voicing. So my thinking would be G1265s, 55Hz Celestion models, maybe G12K-100, and I guess Eminence Legends?

Thanks for the offer, but I think I'm going to ship 'em back to me in Cali. :)

I haven't played a Soldano 2x12, but played a SLO through a Soldano 4x12. It was the WORST 4x12 cab I've plugged into. The SLO sounded better in a 4x12 of G12T-75s. The Soldano cab was dark, dull, and completely lifeless. I couldn't unplug fast enough. I like the SLO with V30s (especially if they're in a Bogner 4x12), G12Ms, and of course the G12-65.

So, I'd ship your cabs back to you. I think it'll cost between $100 to $200. You could sell and rebuy out in SF, and the local gear market there is pretty good, but a Bogner 4x12 with G12-65s is not going to be easy to find. Worth the $200 IMHO just to ship it.

EDIT: but if money's tight, what I'd do is sell the cab locally and in SF buy a used EVH 4x12. My SLO through one of those was damn awesome, and you should be able to find those somewhat easily in the Bay Area for ~$400 I think.
