Do the WGS Green Berets sound as good as original or chinese Celestion Greenbacks?

I've never done a side by side comparison, but I love the WGS Green beret, plus its made in the good ol' USA

I have a set of Greenbacks and a set of Green Berets and they don't sound anything like each other.

Whether they sound as good as, better than, or worse than Greenbacks is subjective.

Do you like one over the other? Which one...to you sounds more vintage?

The Green Beret is thinner, brighter, and more aggressive.
The Celestion is warmer, fuller, and spongier.

Here's a couple of back to backs...

Greenback- ET65 - Greenback

Greenback- Green Beret - Greenback

The Greenback in these clips is Chinese that came in a Cobra Cab. I also have a Quad of Greenbacks that I bought in the early 80's and a pair of late 90's. They all sound... similar but different.

I presently have the 80's Greenback quad loaded in a Splawn 4x12. To my absolute surprise and delight, this combination is just killer. They're not leaving this cab.

So to your ears...you prefer real greenbacks over the green berets. Thanks that is a comparison that I was looking for!

hmmm tough sell... def like greenies over ET65's but I like the green berets in those clips as well. Maybe 2 of each in a cab?

What i like most is that Royer ..really puts the sm57's to shame :( Might be time for a cascade fathead II

I love my ET-65's. That is what is steering me towards the Green Berets.

Right now in that Cobra 4x12 cab I have a pair of Chinese Greenbacks, a Green Beret and an ET-65. Not bad.

Listened to the clips again...I think I prefer the greenbacks over the green berets. The berets sound thinner. Thanks for posting those clips!

I had UK Celestion Greenbacks, and now have the Green Berets. I think the WGS speakers are less bright, less shrill, with a more broken in sound.

Thanks for the clips, Celestion greenbacks are one of the few readily available celestions I have not tried mainly since I play through 212's and the 50Watt rating is just no enough. I preferred the greenbacks in all cases. I used to have a pair of Green Berets and they were nice, only sold them due to the low power rating. I still have and like a pair of ET-65's. I was surprised how much I preferred the greenbacks in your clips to the ET-65's, the ET-65's sounded nasal by comparison.

Greenbacks is the answer to both your questions.

The Green Berets sit slightly higher in the midrange and don't produce as much treble.

The end result is that I feel the Greenbacks have a little more warmth in the mids, but also have more top end detail.

I only use Celestions. My Bogner has V30s, my Stone Age had Lynchbacks, soon to mix in a Creambacks.
In these clips, the Chinese Greenbacks are much better sounding to me than the Green Beret. I even think the Chinese Green backs are as good or better than the expensive Heritage Celestion Green backs.

Green Beret sounds cheap. Greenbacks sound warmer and richer, thicker.

Just curious. What do you like more about the Chinese Greenbacks when compared to the Heritage version?

Also, what does "cheap" sound like? People say that a lot when comparing something that actually costs less, but I never understood how that relates to how something sounds.

Thanks.

To me, it sounds thin, hard, stiff, cold. A good Greenback (broken in, from England, China, wherever) is gonna be warm, smooth, woody, rich, and complex. I understand what the poster is talking about. I had a quad of Warehouse Veteran 30's in my Bogner, but I missed the cut and presence of Vintage 30's, so I swapped 2 of the Warehouse out and slapped V30's in. the cab sounds better now, but I'm probably gonna replace the Veteran 30's with H30's or Vintage 30's. I'm probably done trying speakers other than Celestion. They just do it for me.

That's not what I asked him. I asked him what he liked more about the Chinese Greenbacks when compared to the Heritage Greenbacks. Then I asked him what "cheap" sounds like.
