What's a good hard tail, no floyds or vintage trem, for modern chug. No Gibsons or Fenders either. And keep the price between $500-$800. :checkthisout:
Tough call with no Floyd. There was a GMW hardtail that was selling for around $900 not too long ago.

Epi Bjorn Gelotte sig. 59 neck, ebony fretboard, EMG 81/85 combo, carve top, Grover tuners. Amazing value and a really great guitar all around. (I own one).

When someone says cheap and metal....I think Schecter

Jackson MIJ "pro" series from the mid 90's. Basically just as good as the USA Select Jacksons for around 6-700 bucks. Problem with them is you have to watch for a while for one to pop up as they are getting rare.

Yep I found one of these real beat up on eBay for like $250 before. One of the guys on this forum gave it a paint job for me and it's pretty much my only guitar now.
Yes! The 590 bridge is pretty good and some of them got the J92C bridge humbucker which really is a great high gain pickup.

I'd look into the Ibanez RGA121 or whatever they were called. Fixed bridge, mahogany body, and the RGA carved top shape is beautiful for modern metal IMHO.
Took the words out of my mouth. Why get an RG with a floating trem then have to block it when you could have this. They are getting hard to find though. Here's mine. I replaced the stock bridge pu with a tone zone.

-why ya wanna hate on poor GIBSON for?....... a 24 fret SG with the pup's of your choice is METAL!

Pretty much anything really. Pickups and amps are more important than the guitar itself in this case. Just pick something that feels good to you and swap the pickups.

+1

Recently picked up a Schecter Avenger Hellraiser with through body, EMGs for $550.

For 500-800 the Schecter SLS or Hellraiser series are an incredible value.

So, of those 4 Schecters you have in your sig, what's your favourite pickup combo? Was thinking of switching from the EMG 81/85 combo to the 57/66 combo. Sorry for the quick de-rail OP. :)

Buy this from me :)

Awesome guitar. I have 2 (originally bought 3). Great guitar for the money.

Actually those are great guitars for the money. I've tried a lot of the guitars over the years and 2 of the best playing guitars I've tried off the shelf were a tempest and I think a C1+ or maybe a C1 classic I forget. The action and fretboards were great though. Wonder how these platinum models differ?

I've tried SG's plenty of times. I don't know, they feel weird to me sometimes. Do some have really big necks, and some kinda thin?

I think I'd really go with an Explorer for metal before an SG though.

-yeah your right, wide necks and just about all of them, they don't exactly "look metal" either, ....

What's the neck profile like on these? Is there any meat on it or is it Wizard thin?

Some of the faded Gibson flying v sell for around 600 on ebay. Should have the 500t and 490 pickups which are hotter than hell.

Standard Prestige RG Wizard neck.

Years back I bought a faded Gibson Explorer brand new from Guitar Center for $350. It was during some sale they had, plus an online coupon, and I talked them into selling it to me without the case. The case alone was $175.

Unfortunately most of the best "metal guitars" I can think of have trems. If you don't mind blocking them the best cheap metal guitars I can think of are the older Ibanez RGs or some type of Jackson Dinky. Depends on the type of neck or wood you like too. I think a lot of the Ibanez are basswood and the jacksons are alder.

The Ibanez has a "D" shaped neck with a flat spot on the back that I don't like as much. You can get Dinkys, or older fusions or performers that were MIJ but the necks are a little more round and the actions are better IMO. The board on the Jacksons are a little wider and flatter, I think the radius was like 16" on those.

I found a MIJ Jackson PS-4 on eBay for $200 and it's stupid how well this guitar has served me and most of you RT vets know what a whore I was

 I concur

Just my opinion but these are some of the cheapest feeling lightweight guitars I've owned. I thought the first one was a fluke so I got another one and it just turned out they were both turds :aww:

Get the CTM model - full body width, 22 feet. I have had 3 of them, and they outplay any GIbson I've owned. QC is pretty awesome too..
