I had an Epi SG up for sale, and a dude offers me this thing. Considering that the SG was almost like new, it wasn't really a wise trade on my part, but this thing kinda spoke to me.
The dam thing plays so nice and has an almost identical neck as my SGs, but a tad slimmer. But yeah, it's super ugly, mostly thanks to the stupid matte finish. Any guitars with a matte finish, especially black ones, start to look like shit as soon as you play them and they start to get shiny from play wear. So I stripped everything off the guitar and polished it. I used a nickel Gotoh bridge and tailpiece that I had in my parts stash, a P90 sized humbucker for the neck and an alnico II bridge pickup in the bridge. I rewired it completely with new full size pots, Switchcraft 3-way and jack.
So, I've probably put way more into this thing than it's worth, but It's a fantastic guitar and is now like a fourth (slightly retarded) sibling to my three SGs. I still need to get some nickel finish tuners to replace the black Grovers, and I'm not really happy with the pickups I put in. Maybe I'll throw a set of Seth Lovers in it because they sound great in my SGs.
I've never played one of these Idols before, but used to see various different versions of them for sale. For anyone that likes SGs they are a good alternative because they have the slim, heavily bevelled mahogany body, set mahogany neck, they're light, but the neck is set closer in to the body so there is no hint of neck dive.
The fretboard is ugly, so at some point I'll install dot inlays and dye it a darker color.
Here's two of the SGs. I guess I have a type.
