combo amps with as much gain and punch as amp heads?

I have never found a combo that sounds as good as a head/cab. They always sound boxy or honky to me. They usually weigh a ton too.
Buy yourself a 1x12 or a 2x12 and throw a head on top. A Mesa Mark head on a Thiele 1x12 is a tidy little package that will deliver the goods. And then you can use the same head with a 4x12 if you want to get really serious.

That would be hard to find for $1000 even used wouldn't it?

Not really. There's a Thiele in the classifieds @ $300 plus ship and you can find Mark III's $700-$800 range quite often. You may be a little over a grand but it's money well spent IMO and you can always recoup your investment quicker on a head over a combo if you wanted to.
