It's common knowledge (or not so common, i don't want to presume too much) that Yngwie's core sound comes from the dimed DOD 250/308 or Fender YJM which is followed by a Boss NS-2. Single coils in the front, loud mid-gain Marshall in the back.
I'd like to know if anybody has tried different noise gate pedals after the overdrive and what the results were, using the NS-2 as a reference. I understand the tone coloration of the NS-2 is also a contributing factor to the overall sound, so if i'm after the YJM tone, why use anything else, right?
The reason i'm asking is that i'd like to have a noise gate for more modern metal rhythm sounds, particularly high gain staccato type rhythm. Recently i tried my NS-2 in front of an overdrive going into a high gain amp (guitar -> NS-2 input -> NS-2 output -> overdrive -> amp). This was to tighten the guitar sound when doing palm mutes to get that staccato feel.
I found that the NS-2 did a poor job at it. The gate did not clamp down hard enough and left a bit of flubbiness. The flubbiness wasn't too bad; what was more disappointing was that the NS-2 actually added some noise while the gate was closing. Some kind of hiss combined with buzz. And then there was the tone coloration which seemed quite noticeable in this context.
So yeah, has anybody tried other noise gates in a YJM setup? Would i be better off getting a different noise gate for modern metal use and keeping the NS-2 only for the YJM sound? I was really hoping the NS-2 could serve for both but it appears not to -- or could my NS-2 just be broken with regards to the noise it's adding? (The coloration i'm prepared to accept).
