comparing different noise gates for Yngwie rig and modern

It's common knowledge (or not so common, i don't want to presume too much) that Yngwie's core sound comes from the dimed DOD 250/308 or Fender YJM which is followed by a Boss NS-2. Single coils in the front, loud mid-gain Marshall in the back.

I'd like to know if anybody has tried different noise gate pedals after the overdrive and what the results were, using the NS-2 as a reference. I understand the tone coloration of the NS-2 is also a contributing factor to the overall sound, so if i'm after the YJM tone, why use anything else, right?

The reason i'm asking is that i'd like to have a noise gate for more modern metal rhythm sounds, particularly high gain staccato type rhythm. Recently i tried my NS-2 in front of an overdrive going into a high gain amp (guitar -> NS-2 input -> NS-2 output -> overdrive -> amp). This was to tighten the guitar sound when doing palm mutes to get that staccato feel.

I found that the NS-2 did a poor job at it. The gate did not clamp down hard enough and left a bit of flubbiness. The flubbiness wasn't too bad; what was more disappointing was that the NS-2 actually added some noise while the gate was closing. Some kind of hiss combined with buzz. And then there was the tone coloration which seemed quite noticeable in this context.

So yeah, has anybody tried other noise gates in a YJM setup? Would i be better off getting a different noise gate for modern metal use and keeping the NS-2 only for the YJM sound? I was really hoping the NS-2 could serve for both but it appears not to -- or could my NS-2 just be broken with regards to the noise it's adding? (The coloration i'm prepared to accept).

if your amp has a loop,... put a Decimator in the loop. Thats the only thing that has worked for me when playing heavy gain with a lot of stoppys.

Noise gates in the front are great for fixing noise from the scatter wound pickups which aren't noise canceling. Echoing what's said above is correct - for metal and tighter rhythm playing, you want to clamp the pre-amp tone in the loop. I've heard the decimator does a great job at this - close to the pro rack G.

He is using it for quiet duing start and stops right? because his pickups are humbucking already

Get a Fortin Zuul, presale is open now

Thanks for that. Just ordered one. Really just seems to be the best gate out there and I have been a long time fan of Fortins work. The amp mod he did for me in 2011 is still my number one.

I have been running an NS2 in 4CM for something like 10 years, and it works perfectly for completely silencing anything I dont want coming out of my speakers.

Use more than one gate, one out front and one in the loop.

You are welcome! Yeah I love the gate it rules.

I sure wish I knew of Fortin back when he was doing mods, some of those modded clips on youtube are fantastic

Another cool thing about the Zuul is that you can split the signal to run it in the loop and in front of the amp

4 cable NS2 works great.

Right now I use a regular Decimator after my boost, and a NS2 in the loop.

YM probably liked using the NS2 up front because its calmed some of the highend spike.

Yeah i thought so too. And maybe there weren't many other options at the time. I guess i'll keep the NS-2 for YJM tones and get a Decimator for the djenty stuff then. No matter how i try to set it up, the NS-2's gate just doesn't close quickly enough. And then there's the noise as it's closing - sounds more like a wash now that i've heard it more, rather than a buzz or hum.

For those that suggested the Fortin Zuul, it's way too expensive for me.
