Well depending on how much attenuation you intend on using, the attenuator should out-rate the amp. Rule of thumb is around -12-18dB reduction range you can use the same wattage as the amp, full reduction (silence) attenuator wattage should be 2x amp wattage. Not saying he isn't a goofball, but there is reasoning behind this particular thing. I mean the amp is dialed for huge volume, and he isn't dead.
