Bump. Any recent experiences with the Redback vs. and/or mixed with V30 and Creambacks? ...Or has anyone gone to all Redbacks in their cabs and do they feel they lost some 'cut'?
I picked up two Redbacks some time ago. I think they sound great but I prefer to have them paired with something else vs using two in a 2x12 or something. When I ran 2 RB in a 2x12 I personally was missing some highs that I was use to getting with V30s. Not a huge deal just dial in the amp a little different but I kind of like the V30/RB mix in my 2x12 and in my 3x12 I got a RB, V30 & T75 which sounds so awesome to me. I don't have any creambacks unfortunately to test.

Just curious though if I ever made a clip of what few speakers I got in different configs would it be best to keep the amp settings the same and just switch out the speakers so you can hear the differences? Or is it best to dial in the amp as best as possible for the speaker being used. I was always curious what would be prefered.

Good feedback. Do you think the V30/Redback would have the V30 peaking out from the Redback too much? What amp were you playing through that combo?

Cheers!

I have a mesa mark 4 combo that I have a redback in and I love it.

I had a port city wave oversized 1x12 with a 75 watt creamback and I just did not enjoy it at all , i found it to be kind of brittle and have a weird midrange to it.

To me the redback sounded alot better and more traditional celestion. Def great a great speaker, less sizzle than the h30 anniversary. A little more neutral but not as neutral as a cl80...

Hope that helps !

Hmmm... maybe just a tad with the highs but it's how I like it. It kind of adds almost a scoop to the cab vs being very neutral with 2 redbacks. So far it sounded good with my Butterslax, Cali and Rivera Ktre playing really cranked up.

If you’re using an amp on the darker side or with a lot of low mids, I could see how someone may think the Redbacks on their own would be too smooth and not cutting enough. They’re great with brighter amps. It’s been the best speaker I’ve used with my SLO, and she’s super picky. Went through a ton of speakers, and the Redback is my favorite. I didn’t like the H75 Creamback as much as I thought I would. It had a lot of sizzle. I would think that speaker would suit darker amps better.

I'm play ing a JJ100 and despite what others may say, to me, with the H75/V30 combo, it is bright. I have to run the presence and treble below noon. At gig volumes, even Jerry runs his Presence at 9:00!

In my V30/H75 mix, I can't tell which speaker is grating on me a bit more. Will try some different combos and go from there.

Thanks for all your help!

Neither, new speakers suck...old ones are the way by far?

They literally don't make them like they used to

I had the same problem with that V30/H75 combo. Not a very pleasant sound with those. I swapped the H75’s for Jensen Electric Lightning’s and it was the most balanced speaker combo I’ve tried thus far. Great sounding combo. The Electric Lightning’s were the perfect complement to the V30’s

I like to experiment though, so am trying more speakers and combos before going back to that again

I agree with the last few posts that I do like vintage speakers a lot more overall, but modern speakers also have their place imo. The vintage celestions I own have this warmth, organic tone, feel and responsiveness that new speakers just don’t have, but some like the Alnico Gold’s or Jensen Electric Lightning’s are closer to being like them and sounded great from the get go (even without breaking in) unlike most new speakers that sound stiff and brittle at first

On the other hand, the new speakers I like sound tighter, more robust and punchy and so I like to have them in cabs like my ubercab and Diezel 412 FL for more modern metal tones. Both those cabs have a cross of V30’s and Fane F90’s. Gotta get the right tool for the task, but I favor the vintage ones for most stuff outside the more modern tones
