Been playing around with this thing lately. Changes some things and experimented and learning..
Put in a pair of 6550s, my first pair.
Biased them for 30 watts at 70% and did a peak watts test. I set the volume to where I would have it on my real D120 and I only got 28 peak watts.. Hmm. I turned it up way louder that I would using an attenuator, and it sounded like shit and only got like 44 watts. Hmm that's nowhere hear 42 watts a tube with 6550s'
Then I biased as a proper 42 watt tube at 70% and it sounded better, less strident. But only got a max of 52 watts totally saturated. I wouldn't play it this loud because it sound like shit and it's to loud..
But that said Mike Soldana specked these to saturate with 6l6's which is pretty smart, to get the whole amp to contribute to the sound. You don't get that at bedroom volumes.
If I wanted it louder, I'd look into a bigger output transformer.. I had a crate V30 amp where I put a big Hammond OT on it, and it was crazy loud on like 3.. I won't do that here though. It's just for fun and I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel..
