who would want a hetfield sig based on his current tone?? ... looks like one of those cabs has had a rebadging (probably kirks)
Yeah, this is exactly how I feel - their tone goes to shit and that's when he gets signature EMGs and Boogie?

His tone went to shit when he started using Diezel.
We all know it's true.
Pretending won't make the truth to away.

He needs to pull his old amps out of storage and just get on with it.

You know... I've never made that connection until now.

i like his old sound better, i dont like his diezel tone either.

This just in. Prices for used Mesa Stiletto's just spiked and reviews for the amp are now positive.

I like his old studio tones the best and his new live tones the best...strange but truuuuahhhh

So true. His Mesa rig with the JC-120 for cleans is the best.

Ever since he started mixing the Diezels in with his Mesa's distortion and clean sounds it has went downhill. It's not completely horrible but not nearly as good as it was just all Mesa Boogie.

I'm guessing he's like everyone else though and just wants to try different things.

From the Master.....

“Distortion always starts with the amp. Pedals just sit on top of the sound. They don’t feel like a full part of it, just some fuzz on top. You can fiddle with parametric EQs and all that shit for days, but it still won’t have the smooth distortion of an amp......It really helps solos cut through, but it puts a shitty coating on smooth rhythm tones..…” Guitar Player, October 1992

I've read that quote forever. My guess is he isn't referring to boosting, but referring to using a distortion pedal into a clean amp. Could be wrong just my gut feeling.

I don't know. It could just be a modded Stiletto that James is using in those pics. It's very plausible.

As for the GC video with James, I believe he was using an old Tremoverb.

Yeah sure, as if his tone on RTL was smooth, and as if it didn't have a ton of post EQ all over it.

There's that Fortin Meathead-ish amp Kirk has been working on for years. As for James' amps it definitely looks like a Stiletto Chassis, but I doubt M/B will release a signature amp. Randall Smith (Mesa/Boogie owner) has always said that they will never do a signature head. Even before DM, Krank was supposedly working with James on a signature head based off the Krankenstein, and nothing materialized.

They do mods all the time (James' Triaxis preamps are all modified, and I thought I read that John Petrucci's IIC+ heads were modified by M/B as well). I don't think I'd like to see a signature model for anyone, I'd just like to have M/B perform the mod if they can. I've heard James play straight into a Revision G Triple Rectifier and it sounded crushing. No boost, no FX, just guitar into the amp.

As far as Metallica's tone, you could hear some promising tones if you listen to the "Guitar Hero" tracks, since they were sent out prior to "brickwalling", but I really like the tone of Metallica on the latest "Ronnie Rising Medley". It actually sounds correct, but I think Metallica's best tones, IMHO were on Garage Inc.

Read that Mesa Boogie stated it's not a Stiletto. It's a one off amp done for James. Probably will never see the light of day as a production model but who knows. Mesa may decide to do a few Sig. amps sooner or later.

I know it might not mean much coming from me lol but the plain truth is James has been working with Boogie on an amp for at least a good 3 or 4 years now. If you have paid close attention to the hints on my site over the last few years, this doesn't come as any surprise =)

People said the same thing about pickups, that James would never have a signature set...and now they love them. Boogie never releasing a signature head? Did we forget about the King Snake that was just released? :)

There's always that old argument of tone being in the fingers/hands and that's clearly evident when it comes to James. Give him anything with a decent amount of gain and he's gonna sound like him---no boost needed. He's been playing Marshall/british style amps since the beginning and has always used his Jose Marshall since the black album. He's used rectos since the mid 1990s for one off shows and backstage. His old triaxis setup had one doing the recto tone while the other did the C+ tone. If anyone knows how to dial in his tone without a rhythm boost, it's James Hetfield. He still uses his Klon as a boost for solos, but that's it.

The IIC+ has still been a big part of his sound but we need to remember it's the player not the gear which determines the final outcome. Death Magnetic was primarily his old C+ but the resulting tone wasn't what people imagine when they say he should just bring back the old gear and be done with it.

As far as Boogie goes and what they say...well...we know how that is, haha. They said they would never release a sig? Well there's the Santana King Snake. They said there was no need for a Mark V? Well we know how that turned out. Never release a standalone EQ? We got that this year too. Of course they will shy away and say certain things but that doesn't mean it's set in stone.

The bottom line is, like anything else, nothing is guaranteed. We will just have to wait and see what develops but at this point, yeah he has been and is working with Boogie on an amp =)

All I know is that there are plenty of clips of him out there plugged into a chrome-chassis 2-channel Triple and he sounds damn good.

I'd like to see them do what they did for Santana, and release a Hetfield amp without calling it a "James Hetfield Signature Model". Have him sign them, promo them, everything short of actually naming it a signature model. Everyone will know what it is. It just seems a little less contrived that way.

God, Kirk's playing sounded like a dying cat having an orgy with a Turkey on crack. How can anyone listen to that vibrato and NOT cringe?

Forget about the vibrato.

It would have been nice if both of them had actually learned how to play their national anthem before this performance. They both made a number of mistakes. Boo!

I would hate to see the comments if Metallica had actually sounded like Jimi Hendrix's rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.

Jimi may be a legend but this is not what I would call sounding good.
