Ever get an amp home and just KNEW that it wasnt for you.

I was sure this thread was going to be about the Rivera already!  That would have set a new record for the progression of honeymoon to gear flip!

Haven't taken too many amps home myself, but I've gigged plenty of them.

I knew instantly that the jcm900 and TSL 100 were not for me(except my guitar teacher's 900, it sounded great).

Same with the 6505/5150. I like it for some chug chugz, but it forces me to play in a restricted way that I don't like.
I didn't like the Cornford I played either. I was trying to think of why I didn't really dig the tone in the 'worst amp ever played' thread, and I think it's because it's too nice sounding. It's boring to play IMO.

Nah man....that Rivera impresses me!
I would as much as say its the best amp I have ever owned.
OR my Favorite one to be safe.
I thought it was my ENGL 150 that was king pin....but this one makes that amp seem like a toy.
I hear alot of bad things about that JCM900.....never heard one. Sounds like I dont want to. ;)

The 900's shouldn't even have a Marshall logo on them IMO.

Always hit it off with all my amps...guess im just cool like that :D

Believe it or not the twin jet I prefer the Revision blue.

Of course, I won't list them don't want to offend.

im scared an ENGL powerball will be that way for me.

i like the tones i can hear, but theres no way i can play one before purchasing. so when i do get one and get a V30/CL80 cabinet for it, im hoping it wont turn out this way. :aww:

i love the lead tones it can produce, but with that being said, ENGL amplifiers - i believe - are notorious for this reputation.

another thing i would hate is to have or crave the modded marshall tone - hunting for that tone can be a total bitch and i know guys who have spent serious cash on modifications, only to sell the amplifier because it killed what they clicked with when they bought it.

Kind of. First it was my Soldano Hot Rod 50+. Putting JJ's in the power section gave it some life, but I still didn't gel with the amp.

Then it was my Ultra Lead at first. It sounded good through my Dad's 2x12, but wasn't doing it for me through my 4x12's. It took a whole tube swap (JJ KT88's and Tung Sol's 12ax7's) to get it where I wanted it. The sound went from 2D to 3D once I figured it out. One big prob I was having too was the mid boost button. Engaged it was too much, gave it a weird boxyness. When out, the mids were lacking, and it wasn't just a matter of cranking the mid control, I really had to dial everything in.

Oh, the other thing was keeping the 6 band EQ engaged.

There have been quite a few amps that fit this bill for me.

Orange AD140
THD Univalve
Splawn Quick Rod
Hughes & Kettner Tube 50
Voodoo Amps Witchdoctor

The Mesa Mark V just wasn't my thing. I like the Mesa tones from the Axe-Fx better then the real thing

Marshall JVM410 and VM, VHT Pitbull UL, Mesa Dual Rec and Road King

I know this feeling all too well, it took me all of 5 mins to decide that the Rivera Fandango was not my cup of tea. Sahme too I drove 150 miles to try that bugger out!
