I know this is a tall order....
but anyone here played or compared these amps?
I am into more hard rock/metal. Love what I hear in the Herbert clips.
But I know clips can be mis-leading.
Dont hear too much about the Einstein amps though.
I was browsing thru the Diezel topic posts but all I read is how PERFECT and EXCELLENT the amps are.
Nothing bad.
I am sure they are great amps and I want one REALLY bad.....
just want to hear a straight up opinion from some folks.
Thanks for your time in advance!

I'm biased, so . . .

Had a VH4 in the beginning (2001 or 02) until Herbie came out (05), used that until last year, didn't use the mid cut much (no "modern metal" here, I'm an old school "hard rocker"), also got an Einstein (used that for smaller gigs and such), but ended to get a VH4 again (this year).

Well, Herbie does the "evil stuff" the best, Einstein sounding a bit more open (than Herbie) with less features (if you don't mod it) while the good old VH4 gives you a tight and nicely compressed HR/HM sound.

While channel 3 of the VH4 is "the trademark" Diezel sound (close to Herbie ch2/+ mode and Einstein ch1/mode 3), the 4th channel of the VH4 "sings" a bit better (solos) and channel 2 of latest VH4s gives you the whole spectrum of crunch from (lets say) AC/DC up to where ch3 starts, the mega hotrodded stuff.

So if you just need clean and a tight heavy distorted sound, try a Herbie first - if you also need the in betweens I suggest to check the VH4.

Wow can't say much more than that. Thanks Olaf

I just traded my VH4S old model (there is a difference) for a Herbert. I'll say this the Herbert is more versatile with the mid cut.

Besides the Evil heavy sound I can get some killer plexi tones and the clean channel on the Herbert sounds better in my opinon.

Really you can't go wrong with any Diezel

I am no expert, just like you I have heard all of the Diezel hype and recently played the VH4 and the Herbert at the Scranton Amp Fest. I also played 232caps Einstein when he had it. I have to say the VH4 is probabaly the best damn machine I have played. It laid waste to just about everything else we had there that day, some suffered more than others under it's wrath!  The Herbert is a killer metal machine from what I heard, tight and powerful. The VH4 had nice mids and warmth and would have been right up my alley for 80s from what I heard. Just my two cents but I do see a VH4 in my future, no doubt about it. Crabby can tell you in more detail, as these heads were both his but they killed.

You know me a little TOO WELL dont you.......

No price set yet.....

i cant speak for the VH4 or einstein, but i will say live or in a band mix, the herberts dont cut it. a JCM900 combo 1x12 walked all over a herbert so bad, that only a clean tone or a boosted solo from the herbert cut through the mix of drums/cymbals/marshall/vocals.

the compression everyone talks about is true, and the complicated gain tone is true. clean and crunch sounded good. but the lead tone i seriously would expect alot more from such an amplifer. heard it live ~2 months ago - theres quite a topic about it here on the board danno - might be an interesting read for you.

IMHO i dont get all the diezel hype, however i havent played or heard the others yet so im still open to diezel.

just my .02 cents worth.

I am a 80's metal type of guy.
Not really into the NU metal but I want a amp that can THROW DOWN and not blink an eye while still sounding good.
I have owned SEVERAL amps thru the years......
ENGL is coming out on top for the BIG DOG amp (Love that tone)
but from what I hear on the Diezel side.....it is the Be all END ALL tone I have in my head.
That VH4 sounds really nice.....but can it get as mean and nasty as the HERBIE?
What about the Einstein?

Once again, no expertise here. just my impressions. I thought the VH4 was plenty mean and nasty but also has some depth to it. The Herbert to me was as mean and nasty as it gets but I don't think it had the warmth of the VH4 for 80s stuff. It would however put a hole in the wall no problem. I thought the VH4 had the throw and punch of the herbert. Lets face it, for just tone of 80s metal to me, nothing beats the Friedman marshall. The VH4 adds the power behind it which is really neat, not saying the tone is exactly 80s, not sure. I would need some time with it to be fair in saying it's the perfect 80s amp, but it sounded pretty great to me. I think channel 4 was really aggresive for heavier stuff, but I could be wrong, i liked channel 3. Einstein is a neat amp, very dark voiced from what I recall. I played it again recently with Art and as I recall i wasn't as impressed with it as I thought i had been the first time I heard it. I didn't leave saying I would want to play it again but what the hell do I know.

What is the difference in the two? Which is better or more desireable?

Dan,

We all do it, it's a damn curse!

Dan, it's a though call, I prefer the Herbert since it's more forgiveble and I prefer the gain/texture than the Vh4 (I don't sound good thru these  )

Not to re-start the debate, but IMO the guy didn't set up properly the EQ /presence/mid-cut, or had bad pickups or cab, because it's impossible not to cut thru the mix. it CRUSHES the mix.
Especialy if you didnt like the lead tone.... Chan 3 is beastly, listen to Andy Woods/DFU stuff, it's how it's supposed to sound.
