Diezel Einstein 100 -vs- Herbert -vs- VH4

I dont know what other people are going for when they buy the Herbert, but there were a few issues that put me off the amp.
I like rock, blues, funk (Robben Ford and all that) and country.

At first try, the Herbert really impressed me. I plugged in a 500 buck Ibanez, and it sounded really good. All the modes! Then with a Les Paul... again, really good. Then a strat... really good.
But then it struck me... they all sounded pretty much the same (to me at least). To exaggerate, I could stick some strings on a broom, plug it in, and it would sound great through the Herbert. But no matter what I plugged in, it would always sound like the Herbert, which is nice, but I could never get the tone from the guitar to really come through. (Mostly in higher gain stages).
Plug a strat into a Fender amp, and it will sound like a strat... plug a LP in and it will sound like a LP... etc. Thats what I like.

The compression also got on my nerves a bit... annoying after a while.

However... are you looking for a balls out high gain tone for use as a rhythm player in a metal band... go for it. Its fucking brilliant for that.
Dont get me wrong... its great for a lot of things... just not brilliant.

I have to re EQ my Herbert depending on the guitar I play into it. My Les Paul sounds a lot different than my PRS. I can tell a big difference between the different pickup positions on my PRS as well, going from full humbuckers to coil tapped positions. My band mates strat sounds very different still. But that's why there are so many amps out there. Not everyone likes or hears the same thing from any particular amp.

IDK...each one of my guitars sounds different everytime i plug it in. i guess its a taste thing.

for the record..i would hate to get in a tone battle with NBarts over the Herbert. He is like the Herbert Poster Child!! rock on bro1

Oh no... I am not trying to get into some argument about the Herbert. Just stating what my experience was with it. Its a great amp, don't get me wrong. It just didn't really suit my taste, nor was it intended to suit my taste.
I would still like one for recording rhythm parts on heavier tracks, though.

Well I have an Einstein 50W head and I think it's really cool amp. Can't say I've tried the other two.

The Einy has enough gain on tap for ANY type of music, that much I can say.

Plus I believe it has the best clean channel I've seen on a channel switcher...

FWIW, MightyWarlock and I did an "AmpFest" over the weekend. We had both a Herbert and a VH4 there and we both recorded clips through them, then ran them in parallel as well. The gear used is as follows:

Marshall 4 x 12 with G12K-100's mic'd with Sennheiser 427 and SM57
Mesa 4 x 12 with Vintage 30's mic'd with SM57 and another Sennheiser (809?) MW will know
Into an M-Audio interface and into Logic.

MW's guitar is a Prestige Ibanez SZ series with a Duncan Distortion in the bridge.
My guitar is a Neal Moser (former B.C. Rich Luthier) MMi-T with a Dimarzio Crunch Lab in the bridge.

MW, VH4 Channel 3 into V30's, Herbert into K-100's, stereo recording:

MW will have to weigh in on the stereo recording--I think the VH4 is panned one side and the Herbert is panned the other side. MW did the post-mixing in Logic and I think the only post-production is some high-pass/low-pass EQ and maybe some compression. MW can verify.

I think the best comparison is MW's clip of the VH4 vs. the Herbert. The VH4 seems a little more compressed and has sharper attack, while the Herbert has a "wider" and more rounded sound. Of course, MW seemed to like my VH4 better and I seemed to like his Herbert better. Go figure.

I'll post links to all the clips in a new "Ampfest" thread. Wait 'till you hear "The Jawdropper" -- you should have seen the look on MW's face when I plugged in that thing and went to town...

Let us know what you think.
