because I got an email from Jon.

Sorry

If i didn't need to change out the chip for this pedal to work and if it was about 100 bucks cheaper I might consider it because all i need is the basic functions. but with that said i think i will buy the Columbus pedal. I'm fairly certain i will need a full midi controller in the future.

NO ONE makes a product like you Peter.

You SHOULD NOT need to change out the chip for the pedal to work. I THINK if it's 2005 or older you MIGHT have to depending on if they changed the firmware around that time but perhaps Peter can clarify if this is the case. And if this is in fact the case, you can either get the latest Diezel firmware from Diezel direct or (if it's OK with Peter) I can send out a stock Diezel chip free of charge with the foot switch.

Also I will mention that because the foot switch works via the MIDI In port, there is no way for the amp to talk to the foot switch. This means that if you switch something at the front panel of the amp while the foot switch is connected to the amp, the amp has no way to tell the foot switch that you switched something at the panel. To get the switch for the function you switched back in sync with the amp, you will have to double press the foot switch for the function that was switched at the panel. This is a known quirk of the MIDI protocol as I'm sure most of you already know, but thought I'd mention this anyway so all are on the same page.

Oh i am sorry i am confused about it.

The foot switch is designed to be "plug & play" ready. It is powered via the amp's MIDI phantom power and should work on Herbert, VH4, Hagen. The prototype was tested on a Diezel Herbert that George Lynch uses in the studio from time to time and it worked 100% without a chip replacement.

The one thing I'm not quite clear on is if there were any firmware changes at any point. If there was a firmware change, then earlier amps may need to get the latest firmware from Diezel. But this should not be an issue as you can obtain the latest firmware from two different sources free of charge and it only takes 10 minutes tops to change out the chip if need be.

The Evolution firmware chip that we developed is for something different. Players who use a MIDI controller that has Instant Access buttons that send out MIDI CC messages would just need to purchase a chip to take advantage of the instant access features of the controller they already have. The controller would be used in the same way our standalone Evolution foot switch would be used.

Basically, if your MIDI controller does not have instant access buttons OR you don't plan to own a MIDI controller, you purchase the foot switch. If you have a MIDI controller that features instant access buttons, you purchase the Evolution chip. The Evolution chip also supports the Evolution foot switch, but it is not a requirement to have the Evolution chip to use the Evolution foot switch.
