Monkey will get you by but it doesnt come close to the 808. It depends how you want to use it of course but for straight up input boost the Maxon is in a different league.

How and why is it in a different league? I am not questioning you. I just want to know so I can decide if I need to try the 808. Opinions are always more believable if backed up by evidence.

The main difference can be summed up in one word: Focus
The BM while not a horrible pedal does not have the tight articulate focus that the 808 can add to you sound.

The midrange is similar in frequency but the monk seems very smeared in comparision..kind of like what you would expect fro a $25 imo.
The maxon with less controls, get right to the heart of the frequencies you want pushing the amp's front end.
The other thing I've noticed is that the Monkey adds a lot more noise when pushes through a high gain circuit.

Good analysis guitarman967. Your descriptive words are spot on.
If the OP is worried about spending the extra coin on an original Maxon 808, then I suggest looking at the Visual Sound Route 808. It is virually identical to the Maxon and goes for $110. It also packs a little more volume and punch.
I use my Route 808 for getting that tight, focused sound and for it's typical up front sounding mids.

Shask, the MXR Badass Overdrive is next on my hit list. Really interested in that one.
I recently traded away my GT-OD although it was a fine pedal. What troubles me with the Badass OD is the enclosure appears to be the lighter weight metal type that MXR uses for the Badass '78 Distortion and the new ZW Chorus. Not like the real heavy and solid enclosure used by the GT-OD. I'm sure it's fine, but it is about half the weight of the GT-OD.
I really like the tweakability of the Rhino and it's smooth nature. Not often found with TS pedals. The switch is awesome as well. For $99 it's a terrific OD
I liked the GT-OD a lot, but for TS tones I prefer the 808. But I could easily get by with the MXR no problem.

Thanks. Sounds like I need to get a used one and give it a shot.

I think I'm the ONLY person on the planet who doesn't get along with the ISP, can't tell ya why, just doesn't react the way I want. I'm an old school, tone sucker, NS2 fan.... But I think I've been playing with them for so long, the tone suck, is part of my tone, meaning my tone sucks!!!

But seriously, I do love my NS2s....

oh yeah, the Bad Monkey is the only boost that consistantly stays on my floor.

You are not the only one on the ISP. I didn't like the ISP G-string I had at all. I have learned since then that noise gates for me are not worth the trouble. Never tried an NS2 though.

As for the Bad Monkey versus Maxon OD-808. I had both for a while and I still have my Maxon OD-808 and traded away the bad Monkey. The bad monkey was nice for the money, but sounded more synthetic sounding to my ears. the BM was a nice boost, but not very poor as the only OD into a clean amp. I preferred the OD-808 for both functions.

I am curious about some of Digitechs Hardwire dirt pedals.....

The MXR Classic OD I keep talking about is a GC exclusive overseas version of the GT-OD. I love that pedal for my SD-1 style boost.

The modified badass OD has the same 100hz control the Rhino has...

Yeah we don't have the GC released Classics OD's here in Canada. But I know that they are very popular. Especially at that price point. The look to have that really lightweight enclosure too. I know that the Badass OD does have that 100hz dial too, but I'm more curious about the pedals voicing, responsivness, dynamics etc.
I should probably just stay away from it though because I'm happy with the Rhino. That way I can keep my board to a minimal. Just two OD's, a tuner and gate.

Speaking of the MXR custom badass overdrive, anyone have any opinions on it? Is it fairly flat EQ wise in that it won't color the tone that much? How does the 100hz dial work? Does it feel like it cuts out some lows like a subtle treb boost would?
