I’m a big Metallica fan and really love a year and a half out of the life of Metallica. Are there any other similar type documentaries out there that are must see?

3 part interview with Hugh Padgham.. He's the guy that came up with the big 80's gated reverb drum sound completely by accident...
I really enjoyed it if you have the time..

Ha, as it happens I just made a youtube playlist the other day adding a ton. Have added a few from this thread, but theres a TON here (ignore the preview, when you click it there'll be a long list:)

I can recommend some audio books that have large amounts of studio stories:

- Take it Off: Kiss Truly Unmasked
- Birth School Metallica Death Part 1
- Eruption The Eddie Van Halen Story
- Iron Madein 80-81 by Greg Prato
- Rush Across the Decades Books 1-3 by Martin Popoff
- As Above, So below - The Unofficial Yngwie Biography

There’s a part towards the end of that last Mastodon documentary, as soon as I heard the bass player say “Days in the studio are pretty….nocturnal”, I knew what they were doing, it’s fucking hilarious. When they push the bathroom door open on Brann I almost pissed myself. Just goes to show how much that Year And A Half Of vid was watched repeatedly by a lot of us.

always wanted to visit sunset sound but never had the opportunity.

i did go to Conway Studios (stevie wonder, elton john)

to attend the reveal of the SSL superanalogue XL channel strip,

Record One

to watch zachman track a demo with his old band,

A&M Studios

while filming video and film productions on their historic Chapman soundstage a few times as the production company i worked for was a block away, with the Crazy Girls club (inspiration for the Crue’s”Girls Girls Girls” tune) right across the street on La Brea and Sunset.
