Does everyone try to be Pantera?

I don't really hear a ton of bands trying to be Pantera at this point. Perhaps he meant more along the lines of how everyone's playing complimented each other.

Not much for me to say really... they're one of the few bands I can think of that got notably heavier / more aggressive as time went on (at least until RTS). Most acts go the other direction.

Pantera, Overkill, and bands like King Diamond were a big influence on me when I really started getting into playing music, so I'll always hold them in high consideration. I got to see them live 4 times, and they absolutely killed it every time. RIP.

I just wanna be a dick and say that when rotting corpse was doing thrash from 85-87, Vince and Darrell would rag the fuck outta us saying "that heavy shit will never sell". They hated slayer. They made fun of the demos we made at pantego sound with Vince behind the console. As they became heavier and heavier, we just laughed. It was Phil that made them what they became.

Don't clutter peoples' minds wth the truth, bro. That's not what the Internet is for.

Agree with the above from rottingcorpse above. In the late 80s when I was touring with a thrash band called Atrophy Phil was the only guy that would show up to the the shows in Dallas when we played with Sacred Reich or Coroner. And certainly when we were on the road very few other bands talked about them. At that time it was pretty much variations on the Bay Area sound. This was before CFH really broke so things change obviously. Dime seemed cool and I'm happy for all their success but Rex is FOS.

I personally think there is not one single band out there that is trying to be Pantera. If there is they are not that big and maybe never will be.
Lamb of God had a terrible but successful Pantera phase.

I've had them all with Sacrament being my last purchase. Couldn't hear it.

I will however say I pretty much stopped listening to Pantera after Reinventing the steel so I may have missed something.

One thing in common for me is I really miss both OLD Log and OLD Pantera

Thanks man, it was certainly a fun time! The guys from Coroner were awesome, Tommy would practice on the bus like 3 hours a day and I was always blown away!

I had "Violent By Nature" and that album ripped. I'm pretty sure I saw you guys at the Thirsy Whale with Coroner and Forced Entry maybe?

Yeah we were there. I thought Forced Entry were great but you rarely here them mentioned in thrash circles.

Pantera had as much influence as metallica on the metal world. I'll give them that much. They were awesome for sure.

I've been trying to cop Dime's tone for a good 5 years now (his live tone), and i'm very close with my current gear. It's not as easy as some might think. Some might not like it, but it is by far my favorite metal tone ever, especially "live 101 proof" and "trendkill".

i love Pantera, but if you want that tone buy a am radio transistor and plug your guitar in it

I've heard it all before, so I'll say "To Each His Own", and if it were only that easy! Back in '92 VDOP was the coolest and heaviest guitar sound i had ever heard, but i can see why some would not like it... it's not exactly the warmest guitar sound, and the typical generic modded Marshall sound was what everyone liked at that time.

Forced Entry were a critically overlooked band and they tore shit up live. Brad Hull was a fucking metal beast. I hadn't heard of them until that Whale show and they blew me away. Atrophy, Forced Entry and Coroner. That was such a killer, killer show. I still talk about that one.

Yeah the Forced Entry guys grew up in some small town in Washington where the lumberjacks would pick fights with longhairs so they were really scrappy. They toured with free weights so they would set up a bench in the parking lot and work out before shows!

I saw Forced Entry a couple of different times. The show with Atrophy and Coroner and once with Obituary and Sacred Reich. Great band!

I remember Forced Entry from back in the day. I was in a band with their drummer prior to Forced entry, then he was replaced with Dave from Sanctuary. Brad is now playing in the reformed Sanctuary.

Atrophy was great. My first band when I was 16 covered "Product of the Past".
