Wow! Sincerely, thanks for the info. I never knew this could even remotely be a possibility. I have to say I'm not really a consistant high volume guy but who knows what happened to them before I got them. Would my second cab with the CL80/g12 80s be immune to this as they are much higher rated I think?

They should more than handle it since you've got 320w of power handling (four 80w CL-80's, right?) in that cab...and you're welcome.

This is part of the reason I always use double the speaker watts of the RMS output of the amp or more.

I'd like to smack the guy who says "I love the sound of speakers on the verge of destruction! It's awesome!" But I'm torn between whacking him for blowing up so many speakers and thanking him for selling so many for me. ;)

I've had clients deliberately push, then tear the envelope with their 100w amps into two 65w M75's. They make it about 6 months before they die (on average). Needless to say, there's no warranty for abusing the speaker like that.

But they went right ahead and got two more 65w even though they knew they'd blow them up. Wouldn't even consider the 100w models. :D

But these clients have money to burn that I don't (and probably you don't either).

Either way, you've still got 320w to work with, so you're good to go. Go get Marshall Major...it would really scream with 200w (clean) sent to the cab.

Holy shit, I never saw those before. Just checked it out on YouTube and there was a cool legacy review on Harmony. Can you even get those at a decent price? Ebay is next stop.

If you're wearing ear protection at 5 with your 100w, you definitely will not need a Major.

But that's just the old common sense kicking...fuck that, right?

Blackmore used them in Deep Purple. They have four speaker jacks...for a reason.

  Yeah well said. I had lawnmower ear protection with that JMP on 5 and I was ready to cry. Don't think I'll be needing that anytime soon.

I find really interested the wattage related issues. I had the same problem once with my old plexi and a greenback cab.

So here is a question, can you safely play say a Bogner XTC or Marsha into a 2x12 with 60-70 watt speakers?

Of course! Its a barrier to the sound. However, you might not hear much difference at ear shattering volumes. But who knows? :checkthisout:

I wouldn't run the volume over 4 with those heads of they're 100w models into two 60w speakers. I've had clients test that to destruction already. Two 100w speakers, no problem.

ABSOLUTELY.
Had a very generous friend hand me a 72 or so slant Marshall cab (empty) that had salt/peppr cloth, (loaded shit 70 wattrs in there as it was what I had available then) but it was ripped an looked like crap, so I swapped out for the newer black cloth, and  the tone on those 70's got muddy/ugly by contrast... now that I'm looking to put greenbaks Back into the cab, I'm sorry I did it...

I find that the cain grillclothe has a sweeter tone to it than regular salt and peppa , thats more of a texas tone

I think you're right. I compared Cain/Black Basket Bogner 4x12s w/same speakers & the Cain is sweeter. Has more mid content too.
