Sounds pretty good. I don't think I've heard too many instances of just a Dookie-modded (or crunch-modded) Marshall/similar amp by itself, it's almost always blended with something else.
Dookie was just Cavallo’s crunch modded JMP. They would do one take with a cleaner middier setting and then another take with more gain and more scoop in the mids. The “Lead” amp didn’t come in till insomniac.Sounds pretty good. Not yet, it needs a retube but it's on the to-do list.Did the Jose video happen?
Fair enough, I just prefer an unmodded 2203 or 1959 for lower gain tones. There's something about the voicing of this mod that makes it a little boring at low gain. With a Strat or Tele it's kinda cool, but with buckers I didn't have much luck. Will experiment some more.I do have to disagree with op about the low-mid gain tones. I feel that’s where the amp thrives. Keep the mv down around 3-4 and gain around the same. If you push the master too much or the gain too much, it starts to fall apart too much for me.
Crunch generally was a 470uf and Dookie was 220. I prefer the 470 as it sounds a bit more aggressive compared to the 220.If anyone has had a similar mod done by Martin, do you know what bright cap value he used? I’ll have to check next time the chassis is out but it’s a fairly subtle sounding one on ours.
May explain the lower gain tones being a bit lifeless. Another owner mentioned his gets thin and bright at low gain.
OK thanks - yeah very low value. 470-1000pF usually works better to my ear, I'll have to check what's in ours.Crunch generally was a 470uf and Dookie was 220. I prefer the 470 as it sounds a bit more aggressive compared to the 220.
Cool amp. Will do the Jose next:
Thanks man. Yeah it's a solid rock amp all round really, takes boosts nicely as well.Great review as always. I dug the PRS Drop D tones the bestSeemed to fit into that combination best.
Yeah it did. You're just being grumpy as usualThat Dookie amp did not sound like dookie at all. I've never felt so simultaneously satisfied and disappointed.
My comment was actually a compliment, if you take the latter mention of dookie at face value. I was making nuanced, multi-layered jokes as usual.Yeah it did. You're just being grumpy as usual![]()
We expect nothing less!I was making nuanced, multi-layered jokes as usual.
I took it as a compliment - your nuanced use of capitalisation didn't go unnoticed. That Dookie amp did not sound like dookie at all. I've never felt so simultaneously satisfied and disappointed.
Green Day's "Walking contradiction" has inspired the title of my new book: "The thinking man's guide to idiotic commentary."We expect nothing less!

Sounds like a book I’d buy but wouldn’t read.Green Day's "Walking contradiction" has inspired the title of my new book: "The thinking man's guide to idiotic commentary."
