Doug Aldrich...What's the Deal???

I think he is a good player, but very ordinary/ safe. Don't care for his tones, that Furman midboost thing is nothing I cared for even back in the day.

More than likely he gets the spotlight because he's from Cali, has blond hair and wears bell bottoms.

I posted Deeper the Love one day explaining it is one of my top 80s solos and I got ass raped by many men saying there was no feeling, Vai could not fill Sykes jock, thin tone, etc..................

I was pointed to the Sykes solo on Is This Love and how it should have been done and I will admit that opening sustained note is the shit but while it is a good solo I find Vai's more moving and interesting.

Now Greazy George will hate them both due to Mesa amps and Vai's fashion designer

I like Doug's playing. I wouldn't say he does it for me but I recognize his great talent and love watching him play live. I certainly don't want to take this to a Doug vs Reb thing but I would prefer to listen to Beach play. Personally, I find Reb's phrasing and timing to be amazing. Something about his note choice that just rings with me. I don't care much about the tapping though.Either way it is fun to watch/listen to both players.

If Im being honest, the music that they are playing isn't very original to start with because they are continuing a Genre that ended decades ago, so singling out his playing for not being unique sounding ,sounds a bit to odd to me LOL.

No doubt, but that doesn't stop Reb from bringing something unique and interesting to the party.

I'm hearing alot of about Doug being a cool guy (awesome, I've never met him but I believe you guys) but that has little to do with his talent. I'm not hearing why his playing is so highly regarded...just that it is. Like I said, solid player IMO (I don't dislike him) but I don't see anything unique or special about what he does. I used the WS gig as an example since I just saw it but this goes for pretty much anything I've heard from him, including the recent WS DVD mentioned above (I'll watch it again though). Do I need to go back to Lion? The Hurricane album he played on was garbage, the House of Lords stuff meh.

Obviously this is completely subjective...I'm simply wondering what others see that I don't.

It is totally subjective, and I can tell you from experiance that even if people tell you what they see, the odds are that you will still be scratching your head lol!! (been there trust me!!)
I'm friends with Doug but that Doesn't change my feelings in regards to his playing. I think that he is awesome and deserves all the recognition that he gets and I totally see why he is held in such high regard but that's just me. The point is that sometimes we have to acknowledge that we have differences in opinion. It's like trying to ask someone why they like a particular color. There is really no wrong or right and it's more then likely that you don't like his style. At the end of the day, It's all good IMHO!!

IMHO the problem is having Doug AND Reb in the same band. Maybe its just me (I usually prefer bands with one guitar player), but i think that they dont have enough room to shine.

I really enjoyed Doug's playing with Dio, his Strat tone was awesome. And i really liked Reb in Dokken.

I'm 99.99% sure Sykes used a Plexi on the solo to "Is This Love." Sykes FTW!

Sometimes he throws a few too many notes in but he's pretty awesome and I love the way he attacks the rythm parts aggressively. Reb should be turned up in the mix and get more solos but even he taps a bit too much. All in all Aldridge on the skins was the attraction and now he isn't touring with them, I would be less inclined to go see a show.

I was there too (sorry I didn't catch up with you). Kind of felt the same way. Sure Aldrich was fast and is a great player.
I left not blown completely away too as was my shred loving friend who went with me. I didn't hear any original phrasing or things like that.
I'm not into this super thick low end that doesn't cut either. Frank Hannon appeared to have stock Marshalls and they sounded better in the live environment to me..they laid on top of the bass and drums instead of competing with it as did Aldrich's hugely thick tone.

Reb Beach was relatively quiet as well which I did not expect.

I think Doug gets a lot of his press from being a new generation of the Dinosaur type metal player. In fact the Dinsosaur Rock Guitar website kind of says this...that he is the epitomization of all the 80's players wrapped up in one and is really one of a few "new generation" of 80's metal guitar players. I've heard Doug plays better on strats for what that is worth and that he only plays Les Pauls in the Dio/Whitesnake gigs to create a heavier sound.

I do understand where the OP is coming from but I also think those solos fit the WS genre. I believe you should play to the song.


And Tawny is attractive but I think they could have used hotter video vixens in those videos

i actually like dougs playing better than reb, i never could get into rebs playing to be honest. maybe doug isnt as good of a player and maybe i dont know a good player but i like doug better.
