I Don't get the hate?.....Pentatonic wanking IS rock playing.

Agreed. Why do you have to play with all ten fingers and fit 100,000 notes into 4 bars of solo in order to be considered a good player?

Less IS more. Let the music breathe. Embrace melody.
Nah...less is less. It can be melodic and still be fast or have lots of notes.

I don't think anyone said he wasnt a good player.....I just think he is very ordinary and his cocked wah tone gets tiring.

Doug can shred and not just pentatonic wank. And when he is using the blues/pentatonic scale, he's damn good at it!

Dude just flat out rips. And it's not all "stuck in the box".

That is true, but i also think that for Hard Rock at least, you DO need to add some speed at certain times.

I comprehend your complaining about one of the best guitar players in modern music because his phrasing doesn't meet your standards, Mmmm. OK.

I've seen you diss plenty of players and/or styles that didn't meet your standards as well. Do as I say but not as I do...

I'm glad we disagree, it would be boring if we didn't, and i get his notion that Doug tends to have 2 speeds, fast & faster when ripping, but the guy flat out rocks IMHO. Aldrich has it goin on, and has for a long time.

I imagine after a couple beers & a fatty nobody in the audience is gonna ask for a refund because Whitesnake didn't incorporate proper phrasing techniques.

Melody is great. When you play 7 note scales the extra notes are the ones that define the key and IMO are what makes the melody. Pentatonic is substantially less melodic IMO.

And for the post about Doug going outside the box, yes he stretches outside the pentatonic box into the next pentatonic box and combines them. Still pentatonic though.

I don't have time for theory, i'm too busy playing guitar. :m9:

I think he is a good player, but very ordinary/ safe. Don't care for his tones, that Furman midboost thing is nothing I cared for even back in the day.

More than likely he gets the spotlight because he's from Cali, has blond hair and wears bell bottoms. :)

Zakk Wylde meets 2 of those criteria points.

Matter of taste example here..........................

I posted Deeper the Love one day explaining it is one of my top 80s solos and I got ass raped by many men saying there was no feeling, Vai could not fill Sykes jock, thin tone, etc..................

I was pointed to the Sykes solo on Is This Love and how it should have been done and I will admit that opening sustained note is the shit but while it is a good solo I find Vai's more moving and interesting.

Now Greazy George will hate them both due to Mesa amps and Vai's fashion designer

I'm 99.99% sure Sykes used a Plexi on the solo to "Is This Love." Sykes FTW!

I thought "is this love" was overdubed and done by Vandenburg, not Sykes?
