i go opposite on that.

heroin and crack addicts will bankrupt themselves and everyone around them....only a matter of time before shit end up "missing".

play it smart, you'll thank yourself later!

+1 It is inevitable......Something, one way or another will happen.

I had the drug issue years ago with an old band member, we warned him as soon as we found out he liked meth..."As long as it doesn't interfere" we said.

He was very honest and we had no stealing/money issues. He was one of the best metal singers I have came across and a pretty cool guy.

But 6 Months into the band he had a binge and missed a show..Thankfully we had a friend who could cover but it was pretty embarassing.

That was obviously when we had to move on.

Lost a deal with Metal Blade back in the day because our Drummer was so messed up on meth he played the wrong songs 3 times. We talked to the rep after the show and Jerry our drummer was doing the manic fidgeting nose rub thing. He said "I seen what I needed to see. I will call you but I have to check out another band" We got the total blow off. Jerry took the encounter as positive, He thought we were getting signed, went out to party, then landed himself in Jail. I quit that night, left him in Milwaukee, and never got the call.

If you don't like what is going on then can the dude. Great Guitar players are a dime a dozen.

had a singer like that...he was just fucking incredible..but could NEVER stay out of jail cause of drugs.... and always was leary of him having keys to the practice space...esp after getting there early and seeing him sleeping on the couch... ugh.... he could fuckin sing though.

i'm not referring to weed, or, for that matter, even acid or shrooms...typical stoner shit.

i'm talking crack, herion and coke...the dude was hardcore into the shit too...all of it.
I hear ya on this one. In a battle with our lead singer (who's like a borther to me, so it sucks ever more) Dude can absolutley rip on vocals. But that's no excuse. When someone else's problem turns into your problem it's total bullshit. And if it affects the job (not showing up to gigs or being so fucked up they don't want to book you again) you must take action no matter who the person is to you. I straight up told him I have a plan B singer in the works right now to hopefully change his ways. He cancelled a show without notifying the band until after he said we can't make. Then turned off his phone and the next day said it died. Pretty awesome move, we could at least did a 2 hour show without him. ANYWAYS fuck addicts, birds of the same feather flock together let 5 addicts being a band together (did someone say G 'n' R? ? ?) and see how long that lasts.

BTW Cujo DIEZEL :rawk:

arnt all our favourite players/bands druggies and when they sobered up/cleaned up they were not making such great music anymore?

Yup, pretty much. And throughout recent history.

Music is the wrong profession for a teetotaler clean living crusader.

Not to say you can't try and create that environment for yourself. These guys seem to have had some success with it:
Rush_2112.jpg

But they're the exception to the rule really.

Or it could be I just recently read the Slash autobiography. Although that didn't really offer any surprises but instead details to what I already expected.

:scared: Ever been in a band with someone into PCP ? One live show makes all that other stuff seem like a vacation ...

had a great friend of mine with a bassist that was a drug addict. lit up a bag of weed in my friends own driveway between practice sets - that was the last straw. total ill-regard for people around them and the drugs always come first.

total air head, last i heard from him he was still doing shrooms and the likes. what a way to throw your life down the drain.

LOL. Just the fact you described it as "lit up a bag of weed," is hysterical.
I had to laugh also, I was thinking heroine or crack or some shit like that, I didn't think people still consider "the weed" a drug

Where do I get some of this addictive weed? :D

Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol heads are nothing but trouble...

No use for drug addicts. They bring scumbags into your world. Last band I was in had a large and unsavory following. One guy who was friends with another band member would come by my house for rehearsal and I hated it. He ended up raping a 56 year old woman at knife point. Boy I was thrilled to tell my wife that news.

Another hanger on type got busted dealing coke and went back to the big house for a second tour.unreal. You want to do drugs fine by me but stay out of my musical endeavors and certainly stay away from me.

I loathe drug addicts. Loathe. Wouldrather stay home and record by myself then deal with those types.

The guy is a virtuoso but that doesn't excuse his addiction. Doesn't excuse anyone's. If I didn't care about drugs the ad would not have read NO Drugs.
Artists are of the kind to want to explore the nether regions... Van Gogh and absinthe, Staley and Cobain and [too many to enter here] and heroin, SRV and booze n coke, the list goes on.

But this doesn't act as my justification to let this cat into your band - if you stated no drugs/booze, then kick the fucker out. Sorry to be a hard ass, but I was on the other side for 20+ years and I really don't think, looking back, I served anyone well by being that guy. I didn't steal cheat or lie, but I screwed a lot of opportunities up due to my inconsistencies. I also knew of and know of a lot of cats still in the problem, and ya man, favors turn into demands turn into stolen items turn into hostilities. Not to mention, it's easy to affect others around you when you've got the goods on hand - just one sniff, just a rail, just a pill, just a bump - won't hurt ya man... Famous last words.

Telling an addict to stop is like telling a manic depressive to cheer up.
I don't know why. but i found that kinda funny   .

I've met a lot of guys on shit that can function just fine, make practice, shows, promos etc. I don't think it's fair to single out someone because they do drugs, although there is a certain danger to the ones hooked on the hard shit.

I'm sure 3/4 of the music you listen to is by "drug addicts and alcoholics"

Really it has to do with the persons priorities and how they handle their lives. There's crackheads that you probably talk to everyday, but would never guess it because they handle it.

I am not condoning their shitty behavior when they are hooked to the point of not caring about anything around them and hurt and steal. But i think its important to judge someone on their character and not their habits.

I think its safe to say that people are a rotten, pathetic, weak, lazy bunch... and some of them use drugs too!

There are so many lines in the sand here its hard to keep track. You know what really grinds my gears? People who are addicted to caffeine. How often do we hear "I can't function unless i have my coffee" and laugh it off as if the mentality is totally alien to folks suffering from addictions to other substances?

Meh fuck it, lets just dump on the junkies some more.

If the ad said clean ... he is a idiot.

Personally I could careless what people do on their own time. If it effects the band in any way they are given one warning. The next time they are out. In my experience alcohol causes more problems than other intoxicants. YMMV
That's my take do whatever the fuck you want as long as it doesn't fuck up the gig. I am though surprised to see such a senior citizen knitting circle around here...

This is true, good point. Just like the fat fuck cops etc that have to guzzle a case of beers each night to keep the shakes away yet look down on and arrest others with different addictions or choices. Double standards. I agree with the post above about judging others based on their character and my experience with them rather then their history.

It doesn't pay to get high while cleaning your gun for the church sponsored, weekend shoot.

Anyway.....tough issue but I'll always give someone the benefit of the doubt until it compromises the band. I'm pretty much a sober guy (occasional beer, cocktail) but I always try and remember that rock n roll is meant to be breaking some rules and a little raw so big band fuck-ups aside, I kind of roll with it.......but I never leave gear I can't live without at the rehearsal space

edit point....just thought for a bit how the industry has changed and how you and you're band mates are even more financially responsible for anything your band wants to do or achieve than ever before. Now longterm. The thought of spending that kind of money when a member or two could be serious liabilities is pretty much a no go. Yeah, I couldn't do it these days. (Granted these days my social security teasing' ass would just be jamming' on the DL so it wouldn't matter... :D )
