I'm not defending guys hooked on the hard stuff by any means, but let's not lose sight of the fact that it isn't easy to just stop doing heroin or crack if you've been doing it for awhile. They're called "addicts" because they are addicted.

Try telling a degenerate gambler to stop going to the casino.

You can give people with addictions all the pros and cons you want, but it usually doesn't change a thing. These are diseases that often need to be professionally treated.

And no, I'm not on the "horse" myself. :D

Yes true they need help but they sure as hell don't belong in a band destroying other lives.just wonder how many others deal w this fkn crap regularly. Waste of talent!

Telling an addict to stop is like telling a manic depressive to cheer up.

had a great friend of mine with a bassist that was a drug addict. lit up a bag of weed in my friends own driveway between practice sets - that was the last straw. total ill-regard for people around them and the drugs always come first.

total air head, last i heard from him he was still doing shrooms and the likes. what a way to throw your life down the drain.

LOL. Just the fact you described it as "lit up a bag of weed," is hysterical.

Honestly I wouldn't let it bother me unless they started becoming unreliable. Then I would take action but if he's cool, isn't trying to get you into it, keeping it to himself, being reliable and on time I personally wouldn't care. That's just me though.
With all due respect, the problem with this is that it's just not reality. Dopers are simply unreliable. The fix is their priority, every single day. Not a job, not a wife, and certainly not a band.

Just a little something I picked up playing in a few bands.

I have to place for drug addicts in my life. Like others mentioned, they drag you down and you end up missing stuff.

what, he did? :dunno:

i mean he had the whole side of the house/yard smelling like the shit, we were all like dude WTF?!@   :gethim:

Look at the bright side, u can get his gear dirt cheap, maybe even a bundle for his gear and a blowjob :D

Our old guitarist got outed for being a junkie, personally I could give a fuck as long as u can play and show up. He was much better a player then the new guy who is sober and responsible but a few others are in recovery and won't put up with it. Drug testing for a band?? You've gotta be kidding, maybe for the partridge family.

Why bother buying drugs when that money can be spent on more guitars?...

I had to laugh also, I was thinking heroine or crack or some shit like that, I didn't think people still consider "the weed" a drug

this is an interesting thread, and, im sure to some degree or another, most of us have dealt with it at some point along the way as gigging musicians.

my own bullshit judgemental mentality is: honestly, if you smoke weed, and you're discreet and use good judgement, i could give a fuck less as long as you can play and it don't affect your function as a bandmate, etc, who cares. most of functional america smokes weed (i dont, dont like it, never have). same with booze...you booze, and it aint an issue, i'm cool with it...shit, i drink beer..i dont drink and drive and i don't usually drink at rehearsal...at the gig, maybe a few beers setting up and a shot b4 stage...after that, 2 hours to go, you gotta drive home. i've got too much to lose and i especially don't feel comfortable putting other people at risk due to my own selfish behavior and stupidity, so i just don't get in that zone where "yeah, i'm getting fucked up", cause if i do, then i'm usually ending up "fuct up". so, i mind my p's and q's...you get older though, you learn from past mistakes...been there, done that...sorta thing :)

but, as soon as someone shows up all toothless and putting that "im an addict vibe" out there right away and talking about smoking crack and doing heywron, i'll be tapping out. i dont like that skeevy, shifty vibe that heroin and crack addicts (esp crack addicts) emit. I'm a pretty sober (most of the time) person, ppl hi on either of the two just make me squirmy and i dont want to be around them...so i would't and dont put myself into those positions.
i get that it's a part of life, and part of the scene in a lot of cases and can certainly understand no one else taking much issue with it. To each his own.

I feel ya man, my last project had a good mix, bassist was a completely UN-functioning alcoholic (always drunk or trying to get there) & singer was a pill/opiate addict. Singer was not impossible to deal with, in fact he was & is a great guy, but all you need is that one (or maybe more) experience where they are completely out of it & wasting your time & their own & it blows the whole thing.

If the ad said clean ... he is a idiot.

Personally I could careless what people do on their own time. If it effects the band in any way they are given one warning. The next time they are out. In my experience alcohol causes more problems than other intoxicants. YMMV

if you can get kicked out of the military for it, arrested for it, caught selling it, distrubuting it, or in possession of it, then it is an illegal drug.

and besides im not talking about a doobie here im talking something like this

I used to think the exact same way but really, in today's age of social networking etc, something about everyone is available all over & what we do on our own time, while being ours, can & usually does affect the brand & integrity of the band we are associated with.

arnt all our favourite players/bands druggies and when they sobered up/cleaned up they were not making such great music anymore?

haha kinda joking, and serious.

Not saying all of them... but...alot of them

to add to what alot of people say...yeah.... until it starts affecting thier playing/actions towards band stuff, then yeah, time to loose em and hope they are not a key part of the band !! (song writing etc)

That was hilarious!!!! AND YES, there's a massive difference between smoking weed in mass quantities and being a severe alcoholic or pill junky or heroin junky ! My goodness, if weed was an issue for bands, my last 34 years of gigging would've never happened. BUT everyone has their opinions on weed I guess. Unfortunately here in the tiny State of Vt, I've known too many people starting to lie, steal , and then die from OXY addiction and now Heroin addiction , and yea, I'd never play with anyone abusing them on any regular basis at all . I could care less about pot, or occasional coke use as a musician. HOWEVER, alcoholic musicians I"ve played with in bands really suck
