Duende is sold...what's next?

Every time I see someone talk up the latest little head (Night Train, Tiny Terror, Rebel, etc) I think about these...

rm20hp.jpg

20 watts (ok, probably more like 15, but 2xEL84s in any event) footswitchable gain and volume boost, so you can do leads with it and have them stand out... AND it takes the tube modules. So you can set it up as a 20 watt Deluxe Fender for your country band, or put in a Plexi module when you feel like that, or a Recto module, etc...

Amp also has an effects loop, all the controls for biasing are easily reached without taking the chassis out of the shell, and it even has presence and density (depth) controls for the poweramp, something that 99% of the small amps don't have.

JKD recently sold a head for $400 I think, I was tempted and I already have a combo and a head! :)

Now I know you guys are screwing with me!!

:gethim:

The funny thing is that Im not lol!! This little toaster looking thing sounded incredible! I couldn't believe it! Randy (Tweed) was right next to me and we were both like Holy s%^t that thing sounds killer!!

+1 - I heard this at NAMM too, ballsiest little amp I ever heard!

Axe-Fx?

I like Vox, but if it was me (its not, but if it was) and I was looking for a simple, pure tube amp as you described in your original post, I'd give a serious look at the Trillium:

Here are sound clips of LPs and Strats: http://www.trilliumamps.com/SoundClips/tabid/63/Default.aspx

(I'd want one of these, can't afford it, but we are wishing outloud, right?) http://www.trilliumamps.com/TheCabinetry/Archetype/tabid/56/Default.aspx

Holy shit, that little thing sounds like something cool to have as an alternative to a fancy multi switcher. I think I'm seeing $500 for it? If so, these little things will be a great used purchase in a few months.

Danny!!

the thing has balls brother!! Both Randy and I were like WTF! We thought it sounded killer when he had it setup for teh low gain and then he hit the thick switch and I was like look at this freaking thing!!

wow! super cool, thanks for posting Ralph, did it feel spongey when u played it?

You are very welcome Ant! The amp sounds WAY better in person and Im getting one for sure. With that said, I did not get a chance to play it but I think it is spongy when maxed on the gain and less compressed when in the other mode. Wither way it sounded KILLER in the room!!

Sold my Bogner Duende today. Just wasn't as thrilled with it as I hoped to be.

So what's next through the revolving door?

My Naylor is going to get a cap job, after which it might be the one to beat.

But I'm thinking of going 'all-in' for an Ecstasy Classic next. I'm looking for an amp that's going to blow me away right out of the gate. I haven't had an amp do that for me since I first played a Budda SD80, oh, 7 or 8 years ago....however long it's been...

My criteria: an amp that's fairly effortless to play...'greasy'...but even at lower gain levels and without effects. Great master volume. Works equally well with strats and LPs. Everything beyond that is just gravy.

Anybody have any other recommendations beyond the XTC?

In all honesty, the XTC Classic is perfect at what you're describing, IMO. I think the Classic handles single coils a lot better than the 101b, but still handles humbuckers just fine too.

And what would you know about strats and xtc classics??? :loco:

:D

Mike you already know how I feel about the XTC. If you decide not to go with one I say atleast stick with something that does the Plexi thing well. In the last few years the only two amps that lasted with you are the Budda and Plexi. I think the XTCs Blue channel might be exactly what it is you want. I could be wrong but I think thats where you'll find your tone.

I'm thinking of keeping my Wizard Metal so my Variplex might be up for sale :D
