Fucking Andy La Roque!! First heard him on The Spider’s Lullaby album...holy shit, what an amazing guitarist! Memorable licks & phrasing, shreddy and clean...one of the great underrated European metal guitar players of that era.

Probably a wildly unpopular opinion - I don't get Gary Moore. Maybe I just haven't heard enough of him. If you were going to tell me "these 3 songs sum up Gary Moore and why should you like him", what would they be?

I've retyped my top 5 like 3 times. I give up.

These days with YT you can hear whatever is available from an artist. If you haven’t heard anything that you like, he’s just not for you.

I'm afraid that's it. That's how I introduced myself to him that way and kept thinking "i'm missing something, this must not be his legit shit". Totally hear what someone else referenced as raw energy, but it didn't just blow me away. To each his own I guess. Obviously a talented guy and I love anyone who makes others want to pick up a guitar.

I am a boring, conventional, mainstream, khaki wearing, older dude and my choices probably reflect that...but in terms of influence impact in the genres that i listen to i would probably go with:

- hendrix (
- evh
- chuck berry (‘rock and roll’ went mainstream in a lot of ways thru him)
- clapton (may be boring now but really was the archetype of the rock guitar gunslinger with his marshalls on 10 and les paul)
- malmsteen (i dont listen to his stuff, but...)

That about sums it up for me. I'm 46 LOL

if the list was metal, not rock oriented :

- Tony Iommi
- Slash
- Dimebag
- Zakk Wylde
- Chuck Shuldiner

Go on youtube and look him up. His live playing is so emotional and raw....
This !!! The Loner, or anything from the live show in Stockholm, man, just breathtaking. The sheer emotional content there for a (at the time) hard rock player. Amazing. Probably the best all around hard rock player ever.

...isn't that off topic?
Not at all! The title reads top 5 rock guitarists, not top 5 "metal" guitarists.

Randy Rhoads
Gary Moore
Yngwie (early)
Vogg Kieltyka
Angus Young
