OK, the 5751 in the loop does seem to be very transparent and the reverb works 100% better. I'll try putting a 12AX7 back in just to make sure its not the AU7 in V1. I have been using a TC Spark Booster, "I wanted to hate this pedal" and I think it will become my best boost pedal. Channel 1 gets pushed more by the power amp and I'm getting more sustain and dynamics but at a lower volume without the boost pedal. Channel 2 rocks out with the boost pedal pushing things....all at a reasonable home volume....I'll put up a vid when I get a chance to do one....k.j.

UPDATE:

Though I have not changed the power tubes. I have updated the preamp tubes.

I now have an NOS EI 12AX7 in V1, a JAN Philllips 5751 in V2 (Drive Channel), a Mullard 12AX7 in V3, EHX 12AX7 in V4 and V5. I put a Sovtek 7025 in V6 (PI).

I really like this combination. I am getting classic rock tones with V2 calmed down. The clean channel is now a little softer and smooth. This combination it is not as brittle or as I call it, plinky.

My next move is to put JJ6V6S in one side and Mullard EL34B's in the other. The stock 5881's really sound kinda dead to me. Not that they are worn out, they just don't have a brilliance to them that I like. If anyone has a better idea for the 6L6 side please speak up.. lol

If the JJ 6V6s doesn't do it, I have another matched set of JJ 6L6's that can go in. I am pretty sure anything would be better than the Sovtek 5881WHT.

I used to have a set of Tung-Sol 588's and I loved those tubes. Somehow they were lost in a move. If all else fails, I will order another set.

The EI 12AX7's were given to me by a friend who I helped with EL84's and a few JJ 12AX7's and a couple of Mullard 12AX7's. I gave him all my spare EL84's and let him try the 12AX7's to see which one's he liked before he bought new ones. In return and out of the blue... 2) NOS EI 12AX67's old style made in Yugoslavia... He is a great guy and appreciate it. Those are about $50 each...

Any thoughts on this combination?

Hi ! TJ,i didn't know if it was a typo but ,once again,i see that you're thinking that V2 is for the Drive channel. If you look at the schematics, you'll see that Ch2 is using V1 and V3 + V4 .Ch1 uses V1+V2. Cheers ;) !

Viking... lol... I am such a dope... Thank you for straightening me out. So many tubes, so little brain cells left... Are you still in Crossville?

Viking, looking at the tubes I have, how would you configure the preamp and PI?

Hi,TJ !I don't know if i can help here but i'll do my best ;-)
First,i would say that when you find a combination that you like, keep it for some time,at least :) .Our own ears are different from day to day,so,if you're still satisfied after a few days, you probably have the right combo. Now,about your question,V1 is the most critical position, especially with the Renegade since it drives the two channels. So,i would use the best tube for V1.It could be your EI12AX7 but i can't say,i never tried them myself.Based on your other posts,i think you could also try the JAN Phillips 5751 in V1:it's a very good tube and ,with less gain,it could give you that "classic Rock" vibe you're looking for.In my experience, the 5751 is also very good as a PI,V6 in this case .The effect is more subtil, though but,in any case,it's a good choice there because it's very well balanced.V2,V3 & V4 could be all Mullard 12AX7's and maybe the Sovtek 7025 in V5.By the way,if you're looking for some more brilliance in the clean channel,i would suggest the TAD 6L6 WGC,the small bottle. They are very Fendery clean.

Thanks Viking... I bought an Auto Ranging Multimeter today, so I am excited. I have the Mullard EL34's and the JJ6L6 matched pairs already, so I am going to start there and rearrange the preamp tubes the right way this time. The Jan Phillips 5751 is a great made and sounding tube. I think I am going to put that in V6 (PI), so that I will be pushing the power tubes harder. The 7025 will go in the drive channel.

I need to think about the rest. I have a lot of options.. I appreciate you help.
