EL34 could break amp?

I just now read the 6550 sticky. I've tried the 6550 in my VH4 and I preferred the Ruby EL34's. Am I taking a risk of damaging the amp by using these? I replace my tubes about every six months. I have never had a problem in the past. I've tried other tubes and the Ruby's are my favorites. I would hate to have an issue with them later on though. Any thoughts?

Any power tube runs the risk of damaging your amp when it goes. The chances are small but real. I don't think there is any evidence to say that an EL34 blowing is more likely to damage your amp than a 6550, just that 6550's blow less often.

Although the thought occurs as I type, that if the new production tubes are actually faulty in terms of how they function and not just how often they fail, then I guess it would adjust the odds, as the stresses placed on the amp would vary.

I hadn't thought of that before, so now I don't know, so I'll shut up

This. Any type power tube could blow and take out a screen resistor etc. Everytime you get out of bed you take a risk.

I guess if you buy from a source that tests it's valves then you remove the likelyhood of getting a tube that will be founctioning outside of spec, after that it's just down to luck!

The most effected within a VH4 is the hum trimmer though . . .
