i want to customize my explorer gothic are they a good choice?

IMO they are worth every penny.
I will get my third set soon.

I'm interested in these too, but I wish they came in some other finishes that matched my rigs. Gold covers would sell me on them!

Has anyone converted from the 81/85 combo with the 18v mod to the Het set? The 18v mod is supposed to impart more of a "passive" tone to the normal EQ found in the 81/85, and since the Het set has been described as more "passive" than standard EMGs, I wonder how they stack up to each other.

While I do like the Het Set, I'm a bit torn between them and the 81. IMO, the Het is perfect except for the bottom end. It's just too damn bloated to my ears. The rest of the frequency range is perfect! The Het just needs the low end immediacy of the 81.

I like the Hets too, but agree on the low end aspect. Additionally, I found them a bit too scooped in the upper mids and overall voiced a bit too 'dirty', similar to a really hot passive, for my liking. I prefer the cleaner and leaner 81. I also prefer the 57/66 set to the Hets; plenty of upper mids there.

Seek out some old, orange/tan back EMG 81s if you desire the basic 81 tonality with a bit more dynamics, growl, and smoothness. These old ones have a slightly different resonant peak (taken from old EMG catalogs I have) and a touch less output. They're not night and day from current 81s, but I definitely prefer the old ones.

I know it's an old thread, but since there are recent replies...

I didn't get along with the Het Set. I could dial an amp in to get nearly what I want from them, they're so drastically different sounding than any other pickup I have that it wasn't worth keeping them in a guitar in a normal rotation. (That includes 81s, Nortons, Tone Zones, and JBs). They're still sitting on my bench. Maybe I'll have to try them in a different guitar.

Like I said in my first post:

After I installed the first set in my guitar ( i think it was the Truckster) i noticed a different feel.
They push a little more so i had to reduce gain and i also had to change the eq on the amp.only slightly.

Right now i have them in two guitars (Truckster and Gibson) and the i get out of these guitars with them is just amazing to me.

I've got a set in my refinished ESP Viper Custom, love them.
