Inductance and midrange in Pickups

Had a lengthy conversation with a pickup builder the other day and it really has helped me understand how little changes/tweaks can affect the exact same pickup/guitar.

To short cut it a lot.

More metal = More inductance = More midrange.

We discussed magnetic field stuff as well but that gets to be a bit lengthier to explain.

I was doing testing swapping out roundhead and hex head polepieces and hearing how the midrange was shifting around, tesying braided vs non braided cabling, etc.

It all comes to the same end as far as relying on the inductance snap. Like that chirp I really like in the middle position of a 3 way toggle.

I have a tele that has the wildest amount of midrange in it - thought it qas the pickups at first or electronics but couldn't get it tamed.

Well, the tele bridge is a Humbucker setup that is one large mass of metal that the saddles and everything connect to, including the bridge pickup. That's a lot of inductance!

I swapped out the polepieces for one snwith less metal and there was more clarity immediately due to removing some excess mids.

Almost like this guitar will need a scooped pickup for it to actually EQ out right in the end.

Theoretically then, I should be able to add metal elsehwere to the circuit and create more inductance in a guitar.

Opening a control cavity and seeing a thick metal rod/plate soldered in there may be the next big thing! Haha
