Reference, although I could easily mix on the 600s if I needed to - they are that neutral, no exaggeration

Ive always been somewhat concerned about panning right just using headphones, but I really should reference with them more.

That's totally understandable, but for most rock type recordings the panning is generally hard stereo, hard left, hard right, or center for almost everything except the drums

even if you did have concerns you could always reference your headphone mix with your car stereo or HiFi or whatever

Stereo imaging is pretty much useless on headphones. Some headphones have a "headstage" but the HD600 is not really one, it's more of a "3 blob" sound. Either way I wouldn't bother doing that aspect on headphones, stick to speakers there even a piece of crap speaker set will be a better reference than a headphone.

So, I travel for work, and im in hotels 3-4 nights a week, I havn't been bringing my phones with me, I have a few pairs but my DT990 pros are probably my best and I have been considering making room for them in my bag.. since its so hard to rely on room differences going from hotel room to hotel room. Ive heard in a lot of videos that open back are good for setting a stereo stage, and in an unknown listening enviornment they are probably the best, but I have yet to really give it a shot.

If I was in your situation, I would 1000% mix on open backs like the 600s.

I wouldn't trust ANY monitors, going from hotel room to hotel room and having the reflections and artifacts change

You can always reference on your car stereo, earbud headphones, and any number of other options. I would trust a good set of headphones a million times more than small monitors in an unknown room like that. That's just me personally, though.

Give it a shot and see if you can use them in your workflow? DT990 pros are good headphones and I would try with them first - if you don't like the results maybe try another pair?

Totally unrelated and even further off topic from the OP... we need a recording and song writing sub forum.

I mean, yeah that would be nice if we had one... but it would be dead just like the clips subforum is

Ask me how I know
