The human ear isn't as accurate to pitch as we think we are, and less so with bass. The same reason playing chords turns into a muddy mess on a bass too. Slight pitch anomalies are difficult to identify by ear, and "close enough" will do the trick on bass.

It's not even so much about keeping the bass in tune as it is getting rid of that initial hit of the string where the pitch jumps up and back down.
