EVH 5150 III Problem Already

Hi there,

I bought a secondhand 5150 III 100w head.
Excellent amp, killer tone  , love it.

I've had similar problems with my footswitch too:

At first, I couldn't switch channels correctly, expecially to go back to green channel. The other problem was the effects loop: it stays on the whole time and its LED stays lit, even after stomping on the switch.
I replaced the cable (with a standard 7 pin din cable) and I now can switch between channels correctly! But the effect loops problem is still present. I suspect a problem in the "effects" switch itself and I might want to replace it.

Does anyone know the exact specifications of that switch? Is it an ON-ON, ON-OFF, ON-OFF-ON or whatever other combination switch ??

Do you also think it is the switch that's to blame? Any other idea of where the problem could lie?

The switch is a Carling brand and bears a few markings:

C Mexico
0220

125V
250V

3A
1A

Thanks for helping!

Mine is doing the same thing. Pops when switching and FX loop light is on sometimes then off sometimes. I'm pretty pissed since I was told there was no issues and I used the amp only twice now

I took my 5150 III amp and footswitch to a tech. He got it fixed!
That tech guy is my new god, he seems to know everything about amps!
Turned out to be a footswitch problem: a dead transistor in the footswitch, which he replaced.

So I guess most switching / effects loop problems can be fixed and are just minor issues.

This thread is almost 3 years old with various problems through the years that, by posts seemed to have lessened? :dunno:

Did the whole, footswitch, cable, squeal, etc get ironed out at manuf and design, or has it persisted?

Hi there ! Hope your problem has been solved, as I solved it for a friend of mine.
Have been working on it and for thoses (they are so many) who have any problem with that device, I can tell you should be well advised to sheck the cable before all ... Or to try the test with another GOOD one.
It is very important to use a shielded one, not a midi or DIN which could not be shielded.
Hope it can help, musically !

I just had mine repaired for a problem with the transistor on the channel switching circuit. It was only a few hours brand new so that sucked. Tech said another one came into the shop during the repair and had the same issue.
Juts came back yesterday though and it rocks!

Man I thought they would have worked the kinks out these by now. Sorry you guys are having so many issues.
It's not like they are cheap really either, I want the 50 watter, but all these stories keep me away.
I guess I'll wait, or buy used that has already been fixed.
