I have no history with either amp. But am I crazy thinking that they sound the same?

Pretty close dude. Think the EVH sounds a little more ragged/rattier, especially on the green channel boosted a little bit. Closer everywhere else though...

The EVH seems a little clearer. But the overall voice seems to be pretty darn close. I am sure they were dialed in to sound the same but if pushed to the extremes sure each amp sounds different.

Most people dial in every amp to what they like for tone. If I dial in 3 different amps, pretty sure they will sound close...just different flavors of close.

I saw that video on the Huge Racks Inc. forum and Groomed Noodlers as well, I think that guy wants a Helios now.

I had both at the same time. The EVH sounds harsher and more compressed. The XTC is bigger, wider,deeper more 3D, oozes quality and a better feel.

Am i the only one that didn't care for any of those tones?? Sounds excessively bright, fizzy top end, ratty, whatever... I just hate that kinda tone. The EVH just sounds worse, but they're both shitty.

Here's what I know for sure...I was in a GC today, and they had a 5153 combo for sale, cheap...I really wanted to love it...I've owned 4 or 5 101bs, and I'd take any one of them over the 5153 at double the cost...my honest, personal opinion.
The 5153 was super ratty to my ears; just didn't dig it at all.

I own a 101b and have played through a few 5153s and that vid doesn't do either amp any justice imo.

The EVH is no slouch. Good clean, great crunch on the blue channel and the red has tons of gain on tap. I like that red seems like a continuation of the blue ch, only with more gain and compression. Too many channel switchers are tough to use live because the channels don't "jell".
My only complaint is that it can be difficult to get the top end to open up the way I like without it becoming too gritty or ratty as others said. Gets a little fatiguing the longer I play. I'm being critical though..it's a great amp and can hang with the big boys. Only other thing I can say is it is sensitive to speaker choice. Seems to only have one real sound and the EQ serves to fine-tune that tone. The speakers you choose will either work with that or not.
